Just had my new radio licence through. Read terms & conditions etc. But i have got a small speedboat, could i class that as my tender to the yacht and therefore use the hh vhf in the speedboat?

>What is the point of the licence anyway<

Licence requires exam pass, so operator knows VHF procedures. No licence equals "Hello can anybody hear me only I'd like to know what time the lock thingy opens at that marina that's on the left side just past the yellow buoy. Hello can you hear me. Hello....(voice in background) Bert I think you've to to let go of that dubree on the side of the wotzit before they can speak to you."

Surely that is normal on VHF /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Schedule 1, Clause 1
The Licensee shall ensure that the radio equipment is only used:
(a) to send messages to other ship stations, coast stations, aircraft stations and satellite stations from radio stations used on-board;
(b) to receive messages intended for general reception or for specific reception by the radio equipment from other ship stations, coast stations, aircraft stations, satellite stations, special service stations, radio navigation stations and from radio stations used on board;
(c) to send to and to receive from any radio station any message which is necessary for the safety of life or for navigational safety reasons; or
(d) to send "public correspondence" messages from the vessel indicated in the Licence to stations linked to a public telecommunication system and to receive messages from such stations which are intended to be received by this vessel.

Schedule 1, Clause 2
The radio equipment must be used on board the vessel indicated in the Licence except in the case of an emergency when the radio equipment may be used anywhere.

Seems it is not permitted to use the HH even in a tender unless in an emergency. Technically you could carry it but must not use it except as above.

I believe the fine is £5,000, although I stand ready to be corrected on that one, so the question is do you feel lucky?

As the licence is now free why not apply for one for your speed boat?.

[/ QUOTE ] You have presumably included your H/H on your "Ship Radio Licence". What you should do is apply for a "Ship Portable Radio Licence" That will give you a "T" number (instead of the usual alpha numeric call sign) and it will not be tied to an particular vessel. You will then be able to legally use it on your speed boat or any other boat. Optional then whether you leave it on your main Ship Licence or delete it from there.

Flag rules define a tender ..........

[/ QUOTE ] If that is the case no small yacht "tenders" will qualify. A "T" number licence solves all. It costs nothing and only takes a few moments on-line if you are already registered with Ofcom (3 page application compared with 9 for a full Ship Licence)
