as it says, what is a code 5 sail for example. what does code mean. is the rr genoa on my old tub now a code 1?

It's the new way of defining spinnakers as they've got so much more complicated recently with many more options available, so bigger boats now carry quite a large number of kites.
Broadly speaking the higher the number the higher the windstrength, though some are for hot angles etc.
So Code 0s are flat Asymetric sails used to go to windward in light conditions whilst actually measuring as a spinnaker, not a jib. Code 1s are light weather spinnakers, code 2s all round kites etc.
Despite sailing with "Code" kites for a few years I haven't really totally got my head round it, and much prefer calling for the heavy kite than the code4! Especially as we only have 3 on board so it saves confusion.

Yeehah!!! I'm up to date. I've got a code 1 (or maybe 2) without previously knowing it. Just wait till we pick up our prize tomorrow and I can tell al the other old duffers that we wouldnt have done so well without our code 1.

You've probably got a code 2. Code 1 is a bit like tissue paper, very expensive tissue paper!
And anyway you never answered my question on the other thread, did you win, or is this a second place pot you're picking up?

Sadly we came second out of 15. I couldnt make the last race through illness, but then only the three cruiser racers on handicaps below 950 made it to the turning mark in the 5kn of wind there was. All the family boats like mine (ie handicap above 1050) failed to finish. So even had we raced and managed to make the mark, we would still have done no better than 4th which wasnt good enough. It was a fast boat day.
Good fun anyway, and thanks for all the help. Next series starts February apart from the boxing day race.
