Whilst walking the dogs in the fog this morning we discussed this and both came up with the same answer.

Its wasn't heavy weather, it wasn't restricted visibility, it wasn't swamping the dinghy (and the outboard) it wasn't any of our mooring/anchoring/navigational cock ups.

It was the Stuart Turner fitted to our first cruising boat. Its over twenty years ago now but memories of that recalcitrant little b@stard still give us both nightmares.

Absolutely nothing YET. Don't expect anything ever will. Since I discovered it haven't had a moments hesitation in doing it, encoraging others to do it, not stopped talking about it and bore all my friends sh**less about it and I still don't give a toss what they think about it so long as I can do it, thats all that matters./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Would put anyone off. Some of the places you go to. Some of the attitudes of the companies you have to deal with.

Of course if you add positive instead of negative, them you can get a list of why I still do it.

The only thing really puts me off is the drive to the boat.

I wont hear a bad word said against Stuart Turners .They give faultless service as mooring weights./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

My father had a boat that leaked so much going to windward we had to heave too now and then to catch up with the pumping.That nearly put me off (gave me strong arms though)

All those enterprising people who are convinced that since you have a boat you must be loaded and don't mind contributing to their cause by paying massive prices for stuff you could buy at halfords if they let them open a shop in the marina.

It's interesting to note how many of these laments relate to the South Coast/Solent area, yet the other day there was a lot of enthusiasm for some knocking copy on the East Coast. I remember phrases like: "...bloody East Coast" and "....blasted swatchways" So, after all, may be there is something to be said for uncrowded, sheltered estuaries where you can anchor for free and row ashore for a glass of Adnams.

Fees for Moorings.

Whether its permanent berths or money to swing to your anchor there seems to be conspiracy to take as much money as possible and give as little as possible in return.

It represents the single biggest cost I've had owning a boat and its annoying to think that for the cost of sticking a 30 footer into a south coast marina i could charter bigger boat somewhere nice for a fortnight.

True there are always swinging moorings i suppose, but where can you find those that aren't too far from somewhere to keep the dinghy and aren't equally expensive?

Blighted by psychopaths in power boats, skiers, wally bikes, ribs and children driving daddies 12 foot tender round in endless circles.
