What happened to summer?

I was talking to a friend over the weekend bemoaning the poor weather. (in the bar of course)..

He is fed up with not being able to paint an epoxy treatment. I have only had the boat out twice this year. Once I had to leave her due to high winds, the other time it was a close run thing. If it is not blowing a gale it is flat calm. The temperature is nothing to write home about either.

So what but it is only a couple of weeks before mid summer!!!

What has happened to the weather? It this normal or global warming? Is the North Atlantic conveyor switching off? Does anyone have any useful insight?

yes - it's p*ss*ng me off too - put in hundreds of hours work on the boat over the winter, she's been in since Easter and the trip on the newly installed log reads 6 miles !!

Well check out the chart - looks like the Azores high is making an appearance at the end of the week, pushing the depressions up north (where they belong).

There's talk of this year being an El Nino year - something to do with increased sea temperature off Guatemala or something (got bored reading it) screwing everything up for everyone.

These so-called scientific explanations are useless. Night and day simply follow the times when God turns the sun on and off. Wind is due to the clouds rushing around, and peasoupers are thankfully less common since God has cut down on smoking. The current poor weather is possibly due to God having misplaced the heavenly calendar since the Easter celebrations. Acid rain and polluted seas can also be explained, obviously....

A month late

Got a buddy who is big into skiing, who reckons the skiing season has shifted back by about month since he first learned to snowplough. Whereas he used to be down in the Alps by mid-November and back in mid-April, he now reckons to get started just before Christmas and stay into early May.

Maybe the sailing season is suffering the same time shift.

The weather allways turns good when I want to sail and I will be off for the long w/e.

bought a heater this year for the same reason. Sailing is now wonderful in winter - especially as you can actually get into your chosen destination.

Yes, it loses something without the alliteration doesn't it. Whether the missing word has a "t" or a "k" in it depends upon your age I suppose!

I thought it best to keep the wording clean

The sentiment is heartfelt tho' Especially the floats bit
I live in the mids during the weekends and Watford during the week. I can be in Athens faster than Anglesey on a friday night.
Looking forward to this Friday. Watford to Anglesey via Lichfield. HMM should be there for 2:00am.


If it Cooks Flys or Floats, Rent it.

Don't know what you're all complaining about - had a fantastic sail back from Southampton yesterday evening - F4, flat sea, clear as a bell, brilliant sunshine, Solent all to ourselves! Even the IOW ferries went all the way round the fort just to make sure we didn't get disturbed!! (Or was that cos it was LW Springs?)

I live on the west coast Norway, 62 degrees North (Arctic circle 66.5 N) We have had practically nonstop sunshine since before Easter. (today 25c)
So please keep your 'lows' south, to yourselves.

Just because some mad monk a few thousand years ago decided the year should start on January 1st, it doesnt mean the Gregorian Calendars' mid summers day has anything to do with the weather!

And whatever medieval Michael Fish dreamed up the saying in my title got it right as far as the UK is concerned, and if anything Springs are milder than they used to be. 30 years ago (before school age kids appeared on the scene) Holidays in June always seemed to appeal, until we got there that is - rain, gales, bad weather all seemed part of the holiday pattern.

Then the kids appeared and took over, so holiday time moved to August. So what did we get? rain gales, bad weather....

Seems to me in recent years the best time of year has been late March early April, when a consistently fine spell has appeared for several years running now.

But I can remember moving house on 26th April in Birmingham and waking up to a foot of snow the next morning, at least 20 years ago.....

Patience, patience.... the latest long range forecast has Summer occuring around 2 - 3pm on July 21st this year.
