Just finished reading a book about the 1968 OSTAR ('Atlantic Venture', by John Groser). The event was won (slightly controversially) by the 25 year old Geoffrey Williams sailing 'Sir Thomas Lipton'.

Groser talks about Williams' substantial post-race sailing ambitions/plans, so I thought I'd see what has become of him, as his name doesn't seem to be mentioned in sailing circles these days.

Williams wrote a book about the race, "Sir Thomas Lipton Wins", which I have oredered from Amazon for a penny.

But an internet search threw up nothing more than somebody else asking the same question as me- without an answer. What happened to Geoffrey Williams?

Can scuttlebutters go one better and shed some light?

The controversy was that Geoff sailed south of Nantucket rather than south of Nantucket Light. Geoff was following the printed directions for the 1968 OSTAR race, whereas others were following the rule that OSTAR races had previously specified south of Nantucket Light. The difference is probably about 60 miles. Geoff's margin of victory was 17 h.

I've just received a copy of Geoff's book, Sir Thomas Lipton Wins. I'll be interested to read if Geoff makes reference to how he chose his course.
