Want to know what extinguisher is recommended for engine compartment ? Insurers want auto.
Is dry powder the way to go /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

NO not dry powder - if it is activated it can mess up the engine compartment. Go for the auto Halon replacement type - I fitted a Firemaster Halon replacement auto type which I bought at the LBS for a good price. Don't forget you have to calculate the volume of the engine compartment, ignoring the engine volume, and fit an extinguisher to suit. You only fit ONE extinguisher per engine compartment. Models GTFE 1000(1.7m³); 1500(2.5m³) & 2000(3.4m³). Prices vary so shop around.

Definitely NOT dry powder!! It's cheap and cheerful, but will completely buggle your engine if it goes off while it's running.

Not a story - it actually happened to me and it's catastrophic! These things should NEVER be advertised as 'suitable for engine rooms' and is frankly doing so borders on the criminal IMHO. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

powder does put out fires and it does keep the insurers happy... but yes it can ruin the engine should you be unlucky enough to end up with your boat on fire!
