can any1 tell me what size inboard engine would be ideal for for a snapdragon26? and is there any1 who has actually fited a new or used engine to there boat without the help of professionals?
beta 10 hp would be ok
have fitted engines my self but have some knowledge over 38 yrs of ownership.
the engine is only the start
1/ fuel tank
2/ stern gear
3/ prop
4/ extra battery + change over switch
5/ exhaust fittings
6/ skin fittings
I've fitted a new engine in a Moody33 two years ago. No particular problems encountered and I took the opportunity to replace the fuel tank(original was rusty and leaked)replace all fuel lines, new prop and shaft(different prop rotation) replace sound insulation, fitted non leak stern gland and new exhaust system. There are books on the subject and as long you are confident in your abilities it a fairly straightforward job. I used a Beta Marine 25HP diesel, one of only two suppliers who were prepared to fit special wide engine feet to suit my engine bearers(so I didn't have to rebuild the bearers).
I suspect your Snapdragon would need about 15-20HP. Have you visited the Snapdragon owners association? There will almost certainly be someone who will have fitted a new engine and you can pick their brains. The website is:- www.snapdragonmirage.org.uk Good Luck!
tel1, can I suggest you go and find a boat which actually has a full set of working gear?
That way, you can go sailing straight away, wont get into vast bills for purchase and installation. You almost certainly wont get your money back.
There are thousands(yes thousands) of boats for sale within your budget that will work admirably, possibly with cosmetic issues that you actually will see a profit on when fixed.
Oh, and dont travel 10000 miles up and down the country. The boat suitable for the waters you will sail in, will probably already be there. Ask me how I know!
I fitted a beta 25 to a Rival 32 about 3 weeks ago
I replaced the engine, fitted a flexible coupling, replaced the water inlet skin fitting and seacock and strainer, a new exhaust a new fuel system and replaced some to the starter cables.
The engine is in and running but I could really do with replacing the propeller as it is sized for the old engine.
I was lucky in the fact that I could move the engine back far enough to meet up with the prop shaft or I might have had to replace that too
The cost of the engine was about £4k and I have probably spent another £500 in odds and ends getting it in. So if I had replaced the prop and shaft and stern gland it would be looking more like £1000
The biggest thing is getting an engine that will fit the bearers.
The one I got wasn’t the cheapest but it was about right on height and width for the engine bearers and didn’t need much alteration
I probably would of spent what I had saved having the bearers altered.
It is doable just take your time with it.
As for engine size phone beta and ask them they will be happy to tell you.
Very helpful cant recommend them enough
I paid 7600 for a Snappy 26 with a rubbish old engine and spent 4000+ on a new Beta 10 a couple of years later and sold the boat for 9300. Full Circle is right - buy one with a decent engine and save money and get sailing.
