what does the chart marking ZONE INTERDITE mean ?

Yep......as the OP that is the question and it seems we STILL have a difference of opinion.............thats why I am confused still
Thanks all

IT indicates a Military restricted area to which entry is prohibited. ........ No opinions, no confusion .... Fact!

Dont know why you did not simply look it up

See N 31 ( page 51) here:- https://www.iho.int/iho_pubs/standard/S-4/INT1_FR_Ed6_2016.pdf, The French equivalent of Chart 5011

Thank you so much for the pointer to the publication and your help.
SOLVED!
I shall continue to keep out of the area and not sail through it

I seem to recall a collection of flashing lights (cardinals?) marking something or other when we sailed by there year before last?

The local fishing boats have white flashing lights on all their pot buoys - makes a nice change from a dark green ball fender on this side of the Channel ;). You sometimes see them all flashing away even when stowed in a bundle on the stern of the boat tied up in St Vaast.

Another example of ZONE INTERDITE is at the hydroelectric plant on the Rance, St Malo, where the currents generated by the turbines on both sides of the dam are extremely dangerous. An inconvenient fact largely downplayed by the proponents of the Severn tidal lagoons.
