What do you wear under your Salopettes

Another vote for hillwalking/cargo type trousers, whatever is cheapest in TK Maxx at the time, I seem to mostly have craghoppers. As others have said they dry quickly so I usually would rather get wet then dry again than bother with salopettes at all... can't remember the last time I wore them even in cold weather.

Cheers

'Ron Hill' tracksters, as worn by runners and rowers and reputedly also by special forces. I like the old fashioned ones best, now known as 'origin'.

Me too. When it's colder I use the slightly heavier Trek version of the Tracksters.

Mostly jeans as that is what I wear normally. In the winter I do change to long johns, fleece bib and braces before sailing, then don the waterproofs when required. I really have never experienced damp jeans under my salopettes but did when hill walking with jeans/waterproof trousers. In the latter case I would have been exerting myself a lot more than on the yacht. Having said that I have been cold in jeans and salopettes.

Rohan bags in summer, hot bags in winter. The regatta offerings are almost as good and a third of the price!

My hot bags are 30 years old and well worth the price I paid then. Sadly Rohan no longer make good "outdoor" clothing - just fashon stuff.

Sadly true. Back in my climbing days I've been up a hill in truly atrocious conditions and my Rohan Winter Bags kept everything out and I still have them (they seem to have shrunk a bit!). Not sure if their current offerings would last the distance.

The problem with thermals, track suit bottoms, etc is that they don't have an aperture at the front for gentlemen's parts.

With trousers and waterproofs, it takes at least 5 minutes just to pass water after a cup of hot tea/coffee !
I've got several thermals. They are all vented.

I have recently replaced my bags and hot bags (now winter bags) I can detect no difference in quality or material, on the face of it they now seem expensive but allowing for 30 years of inflation they are now cheaper in real terms.

Agree that some of their offerings are now more suitable for Islington High Street than up a mountain or on a boat.

Never cotton.

From hottest to coldest:
Quick dry nylon shorts.
Wicking long johns & shorts
HL mid layer salopettes
Long johns & salopettes.
Add extra long johns for real brass monkey weather

I wear this kit..... Nothing comes close to it in my opinion and believe me I've tried loads of brands. It's a snug fit so you don't bulk out loads and get restricted movement and it wicks the moisture away from the skin rather rapidly. Very comfy to sleep in when off watch too. Granted, it's not cheap.

Rohan have just opened a new shop in Exeter. I toddled in, as you do, and felt the fabric and informed the shop keeper that after 30 years hard wear, with a few repairs, my Winter bags were thicker than the new ones on the shelf. I now have a pair of Craghopper Winter Bags that I purchased for £9.99 in the sale as a standby pair.

do they breathe made of poly/cotton or are the vitals going to get too warm?

Have a look at Helly Hansen thermals. The ones I have do have such an aperture.
