What do you have to do to rename a boat

Is there anywhere I need to check to see if the new boat name already exists or am I free to call it whatever I wish, even if someone has already used that name for their boat?

There are likely 100s of boats with names like 'Zephyr' and 'Serenity' and 'Wind Dancer' and such. You can name your boat whatever you want, however you like, no matter how many others there are.

I'm changing my boat's name, with the accompanying alcoholic beverages chucked into the water (and down our throats) and invocations spoken to the gods of the wind and waves. Not because I'm worried about bad luck (that would be daft). Just because I like shenanigans. Also, Aberlour whiskey.

Have fun!

Whilst there's at least 5 threads' worth of material in bad, yet frequently seen boat names so I shalln't go down that route, I'm sure there's rules on names. 'Mayday', 'Man Overboard' (or, even worse, Overbored), S/V Sinking, etc, would not, I'd imagine, find favour with Lifeboaters or Coastguarders.

Strong language is probably frowned upon too, although there's a boat here that (phonetically at least) is close to the line, so maybe not verboten per se.
