What do you expect from your engineer

The oil is withdrawn from the dipstick tube. It takes a while to drain fully, so it is a job best done by yourself rather than a technician, as it is not difficult. Oil filters are usually very easy to change too, but you will need to check if they need priming (filling)

This engine has a built in hand pump for draining the sump, as long as engine is up to temp it won't take long to empty. There are 2 filters mounted upside down so filling prior to fitting is not possible so best to crank engine with stop held on until oil pressure is shown on gauge.
If you want to learn then either do the RYA diesel course or get your engineer to carry out service with you present and explain what he's doing, expect to pay a bit more for this as you will slow him down. Also he should be able to explain other maintenance to you in a way you should easily understand, this will also enable you to get to know him and build some trust.

i have had some great replies off the thread got some good info realize i had a lucky first season ,no issues ,only wipes in the bog ,no probs to a bin man i have decided to change engineer or tecky and use info got off thread to build maintenance plat to back up serious trip ,without kwackers

philz you gave me the details on 22 september 2013 and have had no work done yet until march ready for the season the thread ,was to get ideas as to expect of my engineer ,and what he needs from me ,and as stated i am new to large mobos and need to learn,cheeers ps sailermans angry cause i am not his type
