hi all

what do you lot clean your pride and joy with

1, what do you use to wash it with

2. what do you use to get the water marks / black grimme off with

3, what do you use to polish the boat with to make it shine

thanks again

Star brite wash and wax with a dash of formula one degreaser in the bucket. Applied and scrubbed off with soft broom.

Black marks are attacked with the same solution but applied with a 3M magic sponge type sponge.

Cut with Farecla G6 (or 3? Can't remember!) then polished with star brite polish with ptef or Mer polish.

Farecla is great, but both polishes don't seem to last long, so I'll try something else next year. I need to investigate some sort of UV protection / wax to keep the shine longer I reckon - any ideas?

Goes on wet

I use Mer products after a lot of recommendation from the Forum. Several reasons:

They work
They are automotive not marine so dont carry "boat added tax" and you can get them at Halfords

The polish goes on if the boat is wet - many products seem to react with water to create a really difficult effect for polishing

I remove black marks with those magic sponges, rust marks with oxalic acid and the experts here tell you to mix it with wallpaper paste to deal with marks on vertical surfaces so it doesnt run off - its also the bees knees for cleaning teak decking. You get it from agwoodcare.co.uk

I love meguires cleaning / polishing stuff for cars easy to use awesome finish so seemed only natural to ring them up & ask about a marine range which they had just brought out.
As with cars easy to use & great finish from the 1step cleaner to pure wax.

I use Aldi Caravan shampoo. I cut and polish with either Boatsheen or Autoglym. You have seen the results. The Aldi shampoo is great, better than any of the marine washes I have used. It cuts through the black streaks a treat.

Bucket or two of sea water and a quick scrub to get rid of the birds' droppings.

We use EVM - available from the Sealine Forum shop amongst other places. Environmentally friendly multi-purpose cleaner that has de-greased my engine bay, cleaned the cockpit upholstery and washed he hull, deck and topsides for several years. Great stuff and it saves having several diferent types of cleaner onboard.

Friends supply it so I guess I have an interest but only as a very satisfied customer.

-A litre of wash and wax last a season, so... Maguires boat something or other...
-Good god.. no black streaks on my boat ! A bit of polish usually does it, but you can get a dedicated back streak remover.
-Lots of products on the shine front, but it is all in the preparation. 3M do some well regarded restorers etc (ie quite abrasive), then you need polish (fine abrasive), then you need wax to protect. I use Maguires flagship products as they are easy to use and last pretty ok, I think. You 'll need a polisher to polish..Silverline do a big heavy one for about £40, or you can get a random orbital one from car detailers for £100-£300. You cant polish by hand (and forget the top-hat ones in Halfords).
Or you pay someone else to do it !

EVM from Cormorant Trading for cleaning GRP/seats. Gets rid of all black marks and streaks.

I can't believe a cleaning product got an middle-aged bloke so excited when I first tried it LOL.

If the surfaces are in tip top condition:

1, Zymol natural shampoo - Halfords £5 (PH neutral, wont remove wax or leave any residue, is a wash only product, steer away from using the 'wash n wax' type of products, these will make life hard when applying the 'real' wax.

2, Viakal - any supermarket £4 safe on all surfaces apart from anodised ally, drying after a wash down will avoid the need, as will filtering the water used for rinsing.

3, Any paste wax with a decent content of Carnuaba, 3m Ultra performance wax, Collinite 885 etc £20, the harder the wax the better, as it has less petroleum distillates used to soften the wax to make it easier to apply, PD and gel coat don't get along too well over time.

Sealants for hotter climates and bigger vessels, A-glaze is very popular, as it handles the heat well and maintains a hydrophobic state in these conditions.

You should not be trying to create a shine with this stage, just protection.
If the surfaces are dull prior to the protection stage any protection will not last 5 minutes.

Get the surfaces performing on their own, smooth and highly reflective, future washing will be easier.

If the surfaces are not in tip top condition, then you will be forced to use higher PH products in cleaning to 'extract' dirt and stains from within the surface.
