Hi guys

So what is the forums advise for my Enfield Stern Drive, Should I wire brush and Antifoul or use some other paint finish?

Advise appreciated

Antifoul is no good on bare alloy, won't prevent corrosion. You need a good paint system before you apply antifoul.
I stripped mine back to bare aluminium, Etch primed, painted with International Primocon , then trilux antifoul.

looks like you have a fair amount of limscale to dead with before you can prime/pain/antifoul
as suggested by Brian above you need the preparation. If you try without the antifoul will just fall of the aluminium

He should have a chat with Barry Scott at Cillit Bang!

Hi All

I just google "cleaning alumimium oxide from stern drives" and an article by David Pascoe says you should sand down to bare metal with 150 grade sandpaper and not use a wire brush or anything. Does the panel concur this is the best an easiest method or is there a chemical alternative that is easier.

Thanks

Nick

It's aluminium oxide.
I cleaned mine with a scraper and then sandpaper.
You need to remove every trace of paint, the complete outdrive needs to be taken back to bare aluminium.
Here's a picture of mine just prior to refitting, I then antifouled with white Trilux which I also used for the Boot Topping and a 1 inch strip between the outdrive and the hull antifouling.

The wire brush is a bad idea because brushes tend to leave bits of themselves embedded in the ally, which is a guaranteed source of further corrosion.

If you want some power assistance, you could try those nylon abrasive pads sold in screwfix or similar. The fiercest ones are intended for removing scale and rust from steel, so should be OK to get the thick off before switching to a finer one to avoid ripping up the alloy
