Just as an aside--- mumble mumble years ago when I was a young MN apprentice, I was doing a college course at South Shields (aah memories- the Latino, the Locarno!!) and one day a lecturer took a load of us down to the breakwater at the mouth of the Tyne to demonstrate some flares (CG notified of course). Anyway, when he set off the para jobby, it went up 20 feet, did a 90 degree turn, shot along parallel to the ground and disappeared among some fuel storage tanks. OOEERR!! Don't know if they were current or expired. We were lucky not to be expired methinks. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Loch Shin</A> is in Sutherland and as such a land locked loch so not Sea... And I wasn't being entirely serious anyway.. ;)

Re: Para flares

Sorry Ohdrat, I didn't for a moment think you were serious. But we have been called out for flares in that part of the world before (thankfully false alarm with good intent)

Maybe I\'m cynical....

It seems that everyone has been given a different reason for needing to dispose of flares. Some say they become unstable, others say that they are not as effective, others that the things may not go off.

I've never heard of an old one failing, and I've certainly never seen any reports of old ones going off spontaneously.

It couldn't be that these things really have a much longer life than we are being told, but it suits the manufacturers if we keep replacing them?

FWIW I keep the old ones in reserve, and put the new ones in the "first use" position.
