What did I do wrong?

On sunday afternoon we went out for a couple of hours. We came out of BYH over to the far side of the river and headed off downriver. A yacht was coming upriver (sails down under and under power) so I moved a little further to starboard to allow him plenty of room to pass on my port side and dropped down to 4knts to keep the wash small. About 3-4 boat lengths in front of me the yacht suddenly swerved across in front of me and I actually had to put harlequin in reverse to avoid a collision. The boat owner then glared at me as I had obviously broken some part of the colregs I have yet to read.

Everytime I pass BYH and the moorings my hand hovers over the gears (separate to throttles, which are already set at minimum control speed for the prevailing conditions!!) just in case there a pratt who thinks he has a god given right of way over others! Always an interesting experience! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If his sails are down and he is under power then he is a motorboat.. (in the classification department anyway)

So he had no 'mystical' right of way over you.

Totally unnecessary behaviour.

On occasions makes you want to turn round and switch to 'Ramming Speed' /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It does annoy me, but I didn't even get the boat name as especially with my 7 month old son on board, I just wanted to get out of the way and keep Alex safe.

I just hope he reads this forum and realises that he put a 7 month old child in danger because he simply couldn't wait another few seconds to turn and hope he feels guilty.

I don't know exactly, but a small yacht of about 25-30 range with a single man on board. He headed off towards Essex Marina. I didn't look back.

If he was singlehanded he was probably doing something else & dropped the helm so the boat swung to prop rotation. He was probably as surprised as you!!

Glad no damage done.

As a singlehander I know it is no excuse but it can be difficult to get those last minute things done for entering harbour - unless you think it through well in advance.

Absolutely, i go out alone quite often and have to make sure the fenders are down and ropes ready etc before coming back into the marina and from time to time i make a hash of things..
However the fact he made no gesture of apology and merely 'glared' speaks volumes unfortunately.

anyway, no serious harm done..
