Casual and superficial glance indicates that
Raggies come mostly from the sunlit hills of academia
and that
Stinkies from base commerce.
With polyticks to match./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I dont think it is quite as easy as that, I suspect that the real discriminator is whether you always want to be rushing somewhere, or want to relax while on the water (i.e. is it the getting there or the being there that makes your day!)

Not as easy as that either, as sometimes you want to just get somewhere and other times relax on the water.

Suspect it's not an easy answer, but here's my theories.
Some buy motorboats as it allows them to go places as they have limited time.
For some it's more a status symbol, or they use them for social gatherings or holiday homes.
Others are adrenalin junkies.

Some buy sailing boats as a way to relax or a timeout from their normal hectic routine.
Some as a challenge against the elements, some to prove their enviromental credentials (ie status symbols)
Others are adrenalin junkies too ( eg racing brigade)

Some of it I also suspect comes down to cost and what's easier

...and some people that trained as engineers but never got to put it into practice are fascinated by anything large and mechanical, hence their SWMBO's puzzled expression at boat shows when they spend ages lurking around heavy green metal objects instead of joining the Q's at the Sunseeker stand.

Also the limited time thing...

Tried both, owned a Calisto 385 yacht for 4 years, sailed it extensively including taking it across Biscay and into the Med for the summer season on the Costa's. I have a degree in chemistry and have run my own business for 10 years so feel qualified to answer on both of your counts.
The problem with sailing is that you are always at the mercy of the weather you need force 3 to go anywhere and don't really want to be out in anything above force 5, added to this the wind never blows from the direction you wish it to. SWMBO prefers to be at a right angle to the deck, and be kept warm and dry in a heated cabin, only needing to get wet when approaching a mooring or the marina.
With the crew off to uni its also so much easier and convenient to sail short handed, the cost of fuel is a relatively small price to pay for this increased convenience, especially when its a small percentage of all the other running costs associated with boating.
As for your comments on 'polytics' (sic), You may have to expand further, that is somewhat perverse and i dont really see the distinction. Unless you are trying to say that only Hippies buy sailing boats and only Tories can afford Mobo's.

no as easy as that either.
If my first introduction to boating had been sailing, then I probably would have gone for the cloth, I think first influences are an important factor

Sounds a bit excessive, perhaps you need to employ a chap or chapess to do this strenuous stuff whilst making sure your glass of red is not spilt. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Axshually seems to be be dead opposite with stinkies posts being mainly bit laid back in the main but hippy? sailing types using any tenuous excuse to lay the woes of the entire cosmos at the door of westminster./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Glasses wern't filled until voyage completed and the boat docked, don't need red liquid while immersed in sailing the boat.
