What can't you buy in Greece

Re: What can\'t you buy in Greece

Proper bacon and dairy products, good cheese especially, although Greek pasteurised milk tastes better than the stuff we have here I reckon. You might have a bit of jip finding a toaster if toast's a must. Apart from that I don't think there's anything that can't be sourced or perhaps more importantly, bettered by local produce. Your post reminds me of my own other way round angst. I have been living in the UK for 4 years and miss the open market and frozen filo pastry a lot, they just can't make it the same here.
Hope you have a great time.

You mean cassoulet is the same as hollands pie???? Black pudding question understood!

I dont intend to eat these things!! Im happy with local stuff. The only exception are some ready small tins of lunch which sometimes i eat when on passage.

Swedens the exception there i have to pack for the duration their beir has 1.2% and UHT milk outside lidl cant be found though some co-ops had a 1/4 liter for 16krone or almost 2 euros. And the "bread" is uneatable DIY only. I will have to add a plank or to to my topsides.

I was not being sarcastic bee. I ALWAYS have jamaica ginger cake on board and if I cant get it in Greece it WILL be a tragedy!
I don't eat Fray Bentos pies though...... If I wanted liquified dog food I would buy it in a pet store.....Ughh!

Very wise trouville. Have respect for your stomach. congealed cows blood and bits of animals that don't qualify as "meat" don't ever find their way past my front teeth! (Including tripe I am afraid)
There are more fat Brits than Frenchmen, due to eating these unmentionable things with no fruit or vegetables.

Re: You could

I suppose Sheep brain and pigs trotters are off the menu then? /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I used to love lard dripping on toast as a kid, it would freak the health consious out these days.

It is amazing whats put in to food.Saddy more and more processed foods being sold. When i go to a supermarket in a trendy port you cant find plain yogurt only sugar flavor and cream ones

When i wanted coliflour or frozen beens they only had ready prepared with fat and sauce 3 times the price !!

You can get mango chutney in lots of the bigger supermarkets. Tends to be in small jars and fairly pricey though.

If you are into curries, one tip is to look for areas where there are lots of agricultural workers and they will usually have an Asian shop with all sorts of goodies.

As far as food is concerned, if I were you, I would rather try local snack and seasoning during my stay in another place. Olives, feta, yoghurt, honey etc. apart from being far better for you health than industrial snack, may prove to be as tasty.

I could live on Feta cheese.... adore the stuff.... and nowhere else on the planet does fresh tomatoes or mega sticky and sweet dishes like the Greeks.....

PS Glyka..... have relatives in Thessaloniki, so a reasonably regular visitor...

Re: What can\'t you buy in Greece

Now that we've explored in depth what we can't get in Greece, how about trying it the other way around, namely:
WHY CAN'T I FIND ANY AMSTEL IN THE UK?!?
