What boat should I buy?

I am a confirmed raggie with a yacht in the UK, but having bought a holiday place near Javea on the Costa Blanca a few years ago I would like to buy a small power boat to keep out there and dry sail in the summer.
I haven't a clue what would be suitable and what I should pay.
There would usually be two of us on board, sometimes 4 and occasionally 6. We just want a boat for for day use, but the weather does turns nasty sometimes so a cabin would be useful.
Ibiza is 50 miles away so something that could there occasssionally without breaking the bank would be good.
Any suggestions what sort of thing I should be looking at? Whats the life of an engine? How can I tell if it is knackered? Any other high value maintenance items I should be aware of?
Where do I start looking?

The $64k question is what's your budget and how fast do you want to go? Having spent one season moored in Denia, my experience is that that particular coastline can get quite windy and sea conditions can be quite lumpy especially in the afternoons when the seabreeze kicks up. Also there are not many anchorages where you can get shelter from an onshore wind so you need a boat that will look after you. The crossing to Ibiza is very popular, we did it ourselves several times and Ibiza + Formentera is certainly worth visiting but the marinas get very crowded in season so you need a boat with good ground tackle 'coz you'll be anchoring a lot. Also the crossing to Ibiza is not to be taken lightly. It's 50-60miles of open water passage and Med weather can be fickle

I would reccomend something like the Jeanneau Leader 705. There area few around for sale at the moment from 2002 with KAD32 diesel engines for sensible money (around 25k).

This would give you a cuddy cabin as somewhere to rest your head, as well as decent covers and a cockpit big enough for up to 6 without having to sit on each other.

The diesel would make sense as it will give the range to cover the 100km (50km there and back) safely and will also keep running costs down. Engine life is a good 2000 hours at least provided you give it a good cuddle every now and again.

The leader also has a fairly decent hull which you will need as sea state can slow you down dramatically and will be uncomfortable in some boats.

Idelly you can look at deeper V day/cuddy boats but these will push your budget up a bit (though I do have a very nice one for sale /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I think the first thing to consider is what berth can you get! It is very busy round you. The locals berths tend to be under 7m so you may want to keep that as an idea.

He wants to cross to Ibiza which is 60nm of open water. Think Solent to Cherbourg. Good though the Leaders are, I wouldn't want take a 25 footer on that passage regularly. Then when he gets to Ibiza, he needs to live on it for a few days at anchor. I'm thinking minimum 30ft, probably 35ft. Also being a yottie, I'm guessing he won't like a plastic bubble boat so I would be thinking more like THIS which is actually built in Menorca and can handle the local sea conditions. But then we don't know his budget so it's academic

Ah, ok. I read the mainly day boat bit and sort of shut off.

Anyway, I would take my 25 footer across the channel without any problems. Though I agree, if the budget will stretch then buy someithing bigger /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for replies.
The problem I have is that berthing in local marinas is expensive or impossible, so dry sailing is the best option. Local yards will store and deliver the boat and launch her on demand so that seems the best option for me though I don't know what size restrictions they have.
Budget is not the main issue, would a budget of £20-30k to get something worthwhile? Then we could see how it works out for us, we may hate it. We could also bring our yacht out here though I doubt that because most yachts I see going past are motoring.

Agree with the comments above,
a lot is depending on your budget for boat and mooring space.
There are some good spanisch boats on the market perfectly suitable for your use, and on which you can do some bargains over there,
like this one f.e.

(although a little low on power)
also the 730 and 780 are good boats,
the weblink is a usefull tool to see whats available in that area, and to compare prices

You can dry berth up to 10m and 3500kg around Moraira, so lets set a target at 10m and £20,000. Are you a resident in spain? I only ask because if you are you will have to pay matriculation at 14% on anything you buy and will need a spanish qualification (if you want to be legal).

Cheers
