For you and your Partner:

Passport and, in some countries, Visas.

For the Skipper: (but even better if you both have them in case one of you falls ill or has to return home)

An RYA Certificate of Competance with a CEVNI endorsement to go through the canals. If you already have the former all you need to do to obtain the latter is to take a multiple choice examination through an approved RYA examiner.

A VHF Operators Certificate.

For Your Boat:

Registration Document - Full or SSR. Make sure it is still valid!

Insurance of a sufficient level to satisfy the country you are in. This varies, but your Insurance company will know. Some countries (e.g. Italy and Greece) also require a translation of the certificate but, again, your Insurance Company will provide it for you though you may have to ask.

Ship's Radio Licence. Make sure it covers all your radio equipment.

Proof that VAT has been paid or that the boat is VAT exempt.

Proof that VAT has been paid

David,

I would be interested to hear your experience on this subject. The RYA FAQs page
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.rya.org.uk/Cruising/faqs.asp?contentID=568381>here</A> says:

VAT – proof of VAT paid on the boat does is not formally part of the Ship’s papers, but may be required by custom’s officials within the EU.

Does the VAT-paid requirement mean an original document, as for registration? For me, and I suspect many others, this is an impossible requirement. I own a Sadler and have photocopies of the receipts for the boat's purchase, giving the VAT registration number. There is no way to obtain an original document as the company is defunct and all records have been destroyed.

I would like to know whether 'the authorities' accept a photocopy in this instance.

Vyv

Re: Proof that VAT has been paid

My boat is pre 31/12/92 but I've got a SAD (C88) Form issued by the Dover Customs Yacht Team before they disbanded it. The form, of course, is an original.

Having said that, I have never yet been asked to produce proof of VAT status, either in the six years since I set sail for the Med or in the 20 years or so before that when I crossed regularly to France. I mentioned it in the list of paperwork as it would seem to be a wise precaution. However, I am afraid I don't know if a photocopy would be acceptable.

Re: Proof that VAT has been paid

I boat my boat in Holland - one of the Documents that came with the boat was a sigle sheet of paper headed by dutch customs - with a big dutch customs stamp on - saying something to the effect that the boat was excempt from VAT - anyway the french customs looked at it - shrugged their shoulders - and then searched the boat. Suppose the official stamp was the thing!!!

The boat was Originally registered in Guernsey when first built in 1977.

Thanks for that info folks - I shall have to look more into this Vat proof business as I've just recently bought a boat :Warsash One Design 1986, and the only bit of paper that I got with the bought is a bill of sale !

We also got stopped by the French Customs boat. They would accept nothing less than everything in its original form, which we always carry - thankfully.

Re: Proof that VAT has been paid

So far we've not been asked to prove VAT status in UK, France, Spain or Portugal... Our boat is SSR and UK/Scottish Flagged; did we read somewhere that the VAT status for a UK registered vessel is the reponsibility/interest of the UK Customs and not of any other CE agency?
With regard to "originals": we carry them but so far have not been "required/requested" to show them; we have a composite form, 2 x A4, laminated back to back, containing all the info...copies in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. It appears to be acceptable and welcome!

Hi

just a pointer as to sailing qualifications.

The French have a strange view of things.

Powerboats over 6 hp need a permis (license).

Sailboats up to about 15m (where sail is the PRINCIPAL mode of propulsion) need no permis or qualifications even if they have a motor over 6hp.

If you charter a boat, they may have their own rules.
