What BBQ?? and other things.....

Forget about a spending spree - just get what you really NEED , like sleeping bags and duvets, and then use the boat a bit before you start buying more stuff. For instance, disposable BBQ's at £5 a throw are surprisingly good value and no mess to clear up either.

Most of us will readily confess (well, the honest ones) that our boats are full of all sorts of gadgets and gizmos under bunks etc - all things we were absolutely convinced were essential but which turned out to be "error purchases".

Use the boat a while and you'll soon decide whats a NEED as opposed to a WANT !

Not saying don't buy things you want if you can afford them but don't rush into buying things before you've got a little used to the boat and how you want to do things.

..and thanks for flogging me your Cobb real cheap!!!

All well and good...but the real difficult thing is to wether to buy

TV.. Hubby has found this one.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270920865071?_trksid=p5197.c0.m619

Now a generator has been mentioned... Theres only so much shopping online a woman can do... :D I have found a Portable Honda EU 10i inverter generator at a good price so far.

Er, why spend £189 on a TV with no iPod dock, when the cheaper one offers it, and all the benefits?:confused::confused:

Avoid the Eu10i, it fails at an early age, and is useless. the 20i is fantastic, buy a good used one off Ebay, and you'll get your money back when you want to sell it. AVOID anything Chinese (I.E. Not Honda, Suzuki or Kawasaki)

Yep, some people do, some don't....;)

I had three Honda's so far, bought in the Winter, and sold at the end of each season. Made £300 so far...:D

Another couple of years you'll have made what I saved :) on a serious note I don't use it very often but when I need it starts every time, its the yellow one and it's reliability has amazed me

My most bestest loveliest toy is a 3kva water cooled diesel generator, but think circa £7K to have one fitted. We usually cruise for three weeks away from shore power in the summer, and it is an absolute godsend. Failing that, you could do worse than invest in a suitcase type gennie (Honda, Kipor etc - let the fight commence..).

Here we go again... ;)

I have a Kipor IG2000 for rent - check my website. try before you buy...?

So far, it's never let me down..

Thats good to know thanks. I take it from your ;) a verbal assault on each others choice of generator is about to commence, and not for the first time... :D

Right... TV issue solved.. I have just ordered a pure sine inverter, being delivered tomorrow. We realised we have a perfectly good TV in the bedroom that never gets used that will fit our needs. so we are going to try that... :D

No, thats why you need an inverter.

You now have one anyway, so it's not a deal breaker, but the iPod dock is worth a great deal!!

Here's my reasoning. (Inverter arriving today and going to use a tv we all ready have).

Buying the boat from my point of view is to get away from all the tv's, playstations, laptops etc. It can be a bit like an episode from star trek in my house. You should see the electric bill !!!!

A basic tv/ DVD player is enough for the bored moments. Good conversation or a good book or game for the rest. Mean mother I am. :)

This is going to be hubby's and my retreat from chaos. LOL (I may lose this battle though).

The inverter so that you can run TV etc from 240volts is a good move.

The inverter will ensure that a reasonably stable 240v is supplied to the appliances. !2v direct from the boats batteries can vary quite significantly from around 14+ volts when charging down to under 12v when the batteries are getting low. Some appliances wont like these extremes so running them from the inverter is good.

Remember the watts info I gave you earlier and make sure the appliances you run simultaneously don't exceed the watts capability of the inverter. I havea 250watts pure sine-wave inverter - MasterVolt - and it handles TV, laptop, ipod dock etc with no problem.

As for going boating to get away from all the home distractions - HURRAY :D

What you need its a nice tender and outboard for the kids to explore the wonderful creeks and backwaters....that's what boating on the Thames for a kid is all about.

As it happens I know a man who has both for sale........

And I have a collection of Avon inflatables and Seagull outboards that I must get rid of. Would prefer they went to folks that may appreciate either rather than just bunging them on Ebay.

Also a very, very nice 7ft fibreglass dinghy with bronze fittings and hardwood finishings. Far to nice for the knockabout on the River so I've never used it.....
