Stand on??......Oh well that's all right then! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But the X boat is the stand on vessel unless there are any particular local regulations I am not aware of.

The ferry is not constrained in manoverability of draft. There is plenty of room!

However, the skipper of the X boat if he had any common sense would have tacked a long time ago.....

I know you did, anybody with half a brain would just keep out of the way, but colregs rule ok!.........I wasn't having a pop at you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Perhaps therein lies the problem, the raggie didn't know if the ferry was coming or going??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ah, I was trying to work out from the wash too, but she appears to be going quite slow. Is this a might-is-right solent make-it-up-as-we-go col reg situation then.

According to witnesses the captain of the ferry, anticipating a problem, issued warning blasts while the sailing boat was some way off.

Erm ... looking at the photo I can't see any channel markers so I guess they are in mid solent - in which case the saily vessel is stand-on ... if the captain anticipated the problem why didn't he alter course/speed ?
However, X-boats are renowned for their stubbornness and tend to standon regardless ...

I take it then from your post that you have still not read the verbal??

Perhaps you think that commercial traffic should go dancing about the oggin on account of some prat in a sail boat? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It 's because the skipper of the ferry took action that the dimwit in the sail boat didn't get swatted.

actually.... yep in some respects.... don't see what his commercial or otherwise status has to do with it...... the rules are the rules.... if he saw the situation developing as far in advance as suggested by the article, he should have stuck a few degrees of port on, and avoided the situation to start with.....

But then again.... I suspect the Solent was pretty busy this weekend... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"why didn't he alter course/speed ?"

He did. read the account properly. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
