Whale repellent !

Whilst discussing antifouling with a friend recently I was told that there is a theory that certain colours of antifouling either annoy or attract whales and should therefore be avoided for ocean sailing.

Has anybody else heard this theory and do you know which colours to use or which to avoid?

Two large eyes painted on the bottom of dingys is supposed to protect them in areas where Leopard Seals are a problem. Maybe the same would work for Whales.

I've found a St George's Cross is good for repelling Wales - or the Welsh at least.

not sure about paint colour repelling whales? I had a large whale swiming around for half an hour or so when crossing the atlantic this year, bottom was painted blue. Starting the engine is the general advice if you are worried as the noise tends to keep them away.

Commander Bill King, ex-submariner, circumnavigor and author now living in Ireland believes that red should be avoided on hulls. He was once holed by a great white shark off Australia and remains convinced that hull color is a significan factor. Blue might provide a degree of camoflague.....

I can't see on the picture what colour the anti-fouling was....

...but I reckon they chose the wrong one!
