With the Whale DV506 diverter valve, does the long end of the handle point to the direction of flow? This might seem a silly question but an answer would help us sort an issue

Yes it points in the direction to flow or from flow.

The flow will either be into the centre connection then out of either of the side connections depending on the position of the handle.
OR
The flow will enter either of the side connections depending on the position of the handle and out of the centre connection.
The handle points in the direction of the side connection that is used the other is blocked
