I had to check my car tyres earlier this week and found they all needed a bit of puff.
Anyways, I got to thinking and wonder why, with all the technology we now have at our fingertips (including windscreen wipers that sense when its raining) we havent moved on a bit in the tyre pressures area.
Why cant they incorporate auto tyre pressure sensors which will tell us when they need more air? Come to that, why cant they incorporate a little compressor under the bonnet that will automatically blow em up a bit when needed?

Why not save all that trouble and probablity of something else going wrong and needing expensive work done and just fit solid, soft tyres. That way no one will have to have a puncture ever again. Wonder why no one has thought of that before? I must be a genius.......

Ah I know what it is. It's Sunday and I'm having a day of rest......

Some cars like the Renaults and Mercs, do have Tyre pressure moniters, that show up on the dash if they are getting low.
As for a compressor built in, now that would be a novel thing to have. don't know how they would work that??

a lot od offroad vehicles already have a system like this in fact IIRC the US Duck amphibious truck had this system from abt 1944. I am sure you can retrofit something. Alternatively (and a lot cheaper) why not fit those air caps that show you have the correct pressure in your tyres?

Hi

On land rovers you can by a kit for an onboard compressor which you can use to run many things primarily to blow up suspension bags when towing or carrying heavy loads have also seem kits for automatic tyre inflation which i suppose could be incorperated into the system

They came out years ago for cars, even stand upto to having bullets fired into them, think it was polyurathane ( ? spelling ) foam.

As others have said several cars already have tyre pressure monitors - some mfrs use them instead of fitting spare tyres these days. The problem with a permanantly connected inflations system is the relative complexity and the problems of confusing kwik-fit fitters! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

One of my Land Rovers has a compressor under the bonnet used to actuate the air-locking diffs in the axles which can also be used to re-inflate tyres that have been let down prior to off-roading. Mind you, it's also got a fridge and cooker in the back that allows me to produce first class fry-ups at the top of Welsh mountains - far more useful than a tyre pump! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

think Porsche had that some years ago. & you can now buy aftermarket valve caps that transmit to a readout inside the car warning if the pressure drops.

Think most of the mainstream manufacturers now have this at least as an option, a lot of cars also come with a compressor and tyre repair sealant instead of a spare, don't think anyone offering self inflating tyres.
Need to go back to the old days of solid tyres, then no problems.
You should remember those/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Citreon or was it Renault tried something like it on their cars recently.Think it worked on some sort of sensor(poss infra red or like that air thing they annoy you with at the opticians.Total waste of time and perishing things were disabled in short order.Did not work when wet/warm or summat and sent scary messages to drivers even tho nothing was actually wrong.

I remember Tomorrows World trialling this system decades ago - primarily for 18 wheel artics, where one tyre going flat can overheat and shred. System checked pressures, and reinflated where necessary. Bleedin complicated though from what I remember

It's not a new idea in military circles - Russian Ural trucks have had it for decades:

PS - watch out with that sig - I had it months ago and Kim told me to get rid of it as he didn't want users thinking the YBW servers were unsafe! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Well, there you are Tone, what you thought was going to turn out as a silly one, has shown you up as being completely out of touch.

Probably as a result of too much head (or pulpit) banging on Thames islands.

Checking tyre puffs are a necessary feature to ensure that you aren't running on slicks - at which point the Blue Flashers will show an interest.
