I had assumed we were too far away but to be fair all the Heathrow hotels are being used as "Olympic" accommodation.

Right then:

Spacious house with additional accommodation available excellent links to the Olympics courtesy of Uxbridge tube station. Handy for Heathrow airport. £4,000 - sorry £8,000 per night for as long as you like. Also available flybridge motorboat at a mere £5,000 per day including soft drinks, toilet paper and sandwiches.

Wanted: Princess 50 flybridge as an upgrade for current P42. Well I need to spend the money on something :)

Check out the Olympics venues http://www.london2012.com/venues. Its not just taking place in Stratford. Uxbridge might be handy for the rowing at Eton and the footie at Wembley and as you say perfect for Heathrow access. Can't give you a link for advertising your house as SWMBO is handling it but plenty of websites on Google

So, given the fact we are unusual / feeble minded / over cautious, for calling into Weymouth en route to the West Country, why is it that we raft up with so many others doing the same? In August 2011 I think we had 4 nights there waiting for winds to abate before heading across to Torquay.

Henry :)
Not sure if this was back to me?
You might be right; I tend to forget we usually move a bit faster and so cover the ground somewhat quicker than most, and so we tend only to need a short weather window for the next hop.

Happy days. Row will be 15 minutes away, footie half an hour.

If we move the cars out and get some lilos from Argos we can house a small army :)

If you can't beat them join them ;)

Henry :)

Is there any connection with these rates and the Olympics....

No connection whatsoever. They've put the rates up because there's no R in the month and the moon is in the 7th phase

Bridport-as you probably know-is pretty small inside, but from 2010 has a small plastic cube built pontoon. Even in pretty still weather this was bouncing about alot with the small swell, though. We managed at 34ft, but it really seems for speedboats.
Lyme Regis now has a small pontoon on the western edge of the harbour entrance. I reckon you can get a 40ft ish flybridge on there, but again I think it is really for local smaller boats to keep afloat when the tide is out. Both HM seemed friendly and relaxed to see a stranger!
LRegis def has bouys,;not sure about Bridport.

No buoys at West Bay and harbour very susceptible to swell from almost any direction other than N. spend quite a bit of time at Lyme Regis, there are now 2 pontoons in the pool and the HM tells me we could moor our 48 footer on the end, but again as it's the plastic jigsaw type I'd be reluctant to try but with anything smaller and lighter then I would give it a go. Just be aware that the end nearest the beach dries swatch your depth.
There are also mooring buoys to the E of the Cobb, again it can get shallow at low water springs. E did tie up to one a few years ago and when we woke the next morning we noticed that we'd moved the thing about 20M out to sea! They are only smallish concrete blocks. We now lie to our own anchor.
Another potential stopping off point is Beer which has good shelter from N and W. no buoys so you'd need to anchor. And further along there's Exmouth and then Teignmouth and just before Torbay Babbacombe and Ansteys Cove, again good shelter from N and W.
There's also talk of a possible marina development at Sidmouth, but that's some way off.
So Lyme Bay does have a few interesting places to stop but nowhere between Portland and West Bay, after that there are more options. And as BB has already said, tuck in when there's an offshore wind and it will probably be flat calm as opposed to rough offshore. I once did Lyme Regis to West Bay in a F8 northerly with hardly a ripple on the surface. The inshore route is a bit longer but IMHO well worth it for the quiet ports and the fabulous scenery. I love it!

The club I belong to have one or two trips to Weymouth and one to Portland harbour each year. We are not going this year due to the inconvenience expected and of course the high cost of berthing. So thats 10 boats with an average length of 8 metres not doing 3 trips of 3 or 4 days duration.

Instead we are planning trips to venues along the solent, does the board think that these locations will try and cash in on the displaced craft or should we give up our week ends away this year?

My wife informed me thats when our 2 week holiday starts, we had hoped to stop over in Weymouth then move on to Torquay and Dartmouth.

Option is to leave a couple of days before, stop in Weymouth on the outward journey then skip the high berthing fees on the way back and just hope the weathers ok for the 90 odd mile journey.

Im a big fan of Weymouth but id say they have spoilt it with this berthing hike beyond belief, especially in this climate, what with the restiction to berth holders in Portland that caps it off for me.

Quite rightly im sure the town quay will be full of charter boats, all making noise till the early hours every night, not a place id want to be.

Slight post drift but of you check the PLA there are big restrictions on the Thames during the Olympics you need to prove that you are going to a home or booked mooring either up or down river.

As for the costs to moor in London I looked and you could only get a week in docklands rafted 4 or 5 across and that was for a 9M at £1k for the week.

Maybe I should put my boat up their and rent it out!!

I am at Windsor and therefore opposite Dorney Lake and the rowing.
