Weymouth Sailing

We really liked it as a base when I was working down there and living on the seafront.
With a weeks sail we enjoyed Dartmouth and Torquay but mostly went for day sails along Portland or to Lulworth Cove or a Saturday night in Poole. Refreshing and almost empty of traffic compared to the Solent and placed really nicely for West Country, Solent and Channel Islands. And most of all for us, we loved the town and a few of the restaurants - Mallams is superb.
 
You've got the whole of the bay and Portland harbour to sail in and Lulworth, Durdle Dor and Chapmans Pool all to yourself, subject to weather and firing range activity. Short hop to Portland (for a free short stay if you are in D+R at Weymouth), Portland is a hidden gem if you take the trouble, I'd be more than happy to winter there.

If you head out of the marina you should find huge amounts of water right in front of you... :p
 
Just have to get through the bridge which might be tiresome for regular daysails so maybe all the Open pontoons at Portland might be more attractive for quick hops out to places named.
 
You also get one when they are letting water out of the lake on the ebb and it can be quite strong.

How long are you staying? I'm planning on going don on Tuesday and maybe going out for a sail. If not I'll be around for a while if you fancy a cup of tea?

Just a thought but is that you next to me on C28?
 
Mrs Saguday and I sailed along this stretch of coast for the first time in September en route from East Coast to South Devon. We decided to stay at Portland marina rather than Weymouth itself but fell in love with the whole area. The new marina is superb and the Isle of Portland was fascinating to explore. We ended up staying for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the buzz and the activity there - just great to see the sheer amount of junior sailing that takes place inside Portland harbour. We very nearly stayed for the winter, and may well have done if the weather had stayed grim, but a window opened and we had an exciting passage round the Bill and across to Dartmouth. Weymouth and the Dorset coast left a strong impression though, so no doubt we'll be back again to linger a bit more.
 
I moved to Weymouth from London this summer, and moved the boat from Chichester to a new permanent berth at Portland - I absolutely love it here. Weymouth marina is a bit of a car park and rather dull, Portland on the other hand is a really great busy, well run, living marina with a good liveaboard community and a fantastic bar / restaurant with regular decent live music, plus all services / chandlery etc right there.

As soon as you leave the marina you can hoist sail and be off and away immediately in any state of tide. Fantastic cruising grounds here and well placed for channel hops or going west, as others have said.

Weymouth Town harbour is lovely, lots of weekend visitors from the Solent, France, and weirdly very popular with the Dutch.

Weymouth / Portland is an absolutely brilliant place for all sailing stuff, I love it here :)
