Sadly, no official is going to come up and admit they got greedy and fecked it up. They (officials and businesses) saw pound signs on everyone and jacked up all their prices thinking people would just stump up. I'm very pleased people have made it clear to these greedy feckers that this behaviour is completely unacceptable.

+1
Just about sums it up nicely.

It's now a reduced price of £10/metre for an alongside berth as is stated on the website. As I look out of my window at the harbourside I see yachts 5 deep along the quayside so I don't think that the Council are going to be too much out of pocket. I guess it works like low cost airlines or bucket theatre tickets ..... expensive at first then cheaper later on.

Lunch time local news on BBC Spotlight; Weymouth Park and Ride now free (as London apparently! So why was it different?) and "there's lots of room in the town" says the journo! Tried to 'big-up' the event but I formed the impression that things were a bit slow.

A friend who is on the Weymouth mailing list, having stopped there last year in his boat, showed me a price list cum sales leaflet he'd had from them earlier in the year - it looked very expensive and far too "controlling" - the do's and don'ts were silly eg anchored boats had to have a tender above a minimum size (4-people) and a minimum horsepower outboard I recall.

We were thinking of sailing to Cowes from Cornwall and decided that it was just too much hassle to be anywhere near Weymouth/Portland, so when the weather turned against the project, it became a foregone conclusion that we would not go.

As we have to drive past Weymouth on this Friday, I, for one, am grateful for the reported low volumes of road traffic.

I walked past the Old Rooms this morning, only 2 large mobos moored along side in the cove . There were a few more on the main quay, however, it certainly seemed no busier than I would expect to see it in August.

You're right in that August is normally busier. Some of the rafted boats opposite the lifeboat have gone out to view but now (1600) there are still rafts of 4 deep.

Whole thing was a mongolian clusterf@ck. We called in on the way down to the West Country on the Tuesday before the "lockdown. Weymouth Harbourmaster could not tell us if we were allowed in to Portland Harbour to see if there was any practicing going on. There was then complete confusion in the office about when the profiteering, sorry, price increase, started. I asked them about the "pontoon berthing for anchoring money" rumour and it was all totally denied.

Slightly miffed now to find out it might have been possible, and to see yachts just loitering about near the course on the TV. Still, we did meet the Bermudan 49er team, and also saw lots of practice in the harbour on the Wednesday. Joke of it was there was zero controls or cordons, you could get as close as you liked!

We're berthing at Weymouth this weekend for a couple of nights.

£200/night, yes more than usual but 4 peeps on board so consider it as £50/head for a 'lympic ticket. About par for the course or less, praps

I'll report back once we've been there and back.

BTW, I know the square root of f**k all about dinghy racing just going down to soak up the atmosphere.

So here's me reporting back.

The whole thing exceeded my expectations by a country mile.

Security measures were impressive and well thought out. We were approached by plods on RIBs for deviating a a few degrees off course and asked to confirm our identity.

Into weymouth harbour for a couple of nights and the atmosphere was electric, both from knowledgeable peeps and general holiday makers.

Saw heats(for no cost) from The Nothe and from the giant (free) screens on the beach. Treemndous camaraderie from c

The few moans we heard were from locals that expected a reward from the Olympics with no effort on their part.

On a yotties perspective from those berthed up in the harbour a great atmosphere with lots of dressing overall and general drinking the crew into oblivion (no change from any other weekend, then)

We had a bumpy (w5/6) ride there and a sublime (s3/4) reach home.

In short a bloody great weekend and one l'll recall to my grandchildren in times to come.

That's pretty much what it look liked to SWMBO and I when we drove over from Poole to have a look round last Saturday.

Of course, folks not interested in the Olympics would have stayed away so numbers are probably not much different from a normal August Saturday.

The town also looked very smart.

I have just come back from Weymouth - some great yachts in the harbour, including a beautifull yacht with all brass fittings.

The town was buzzing and I had a great time - well done Weymouth!
