Our Westerly Merlin has a leaking window over the cooker. Or could it be from the carr on the deck? Do I need to replace the window (there is no visable damage) or just reseal it? Is this a job I could do my self?

Well you do have to first establish what is leaking.

If it is the window then you have to establish if the window unit itself is leaking, ie between the glazing and the frame or if it is simply a leak between the unit and the GRP.

If its the latter It it not an unreasonable job to remove the whole unit, clean up, and refit with new sealant, A non setting butyl sealant being the material to use.

It the window unit itself is leaking I think the most sensible thing to do is to send it away to a specialist window refurbishers.

There is nothing in your profile about your location so it is not possible to suggest any local services.

I'd strongly recommend C&J International for this, partly because I have had excellent service from them and partly because the chap who runs it spent years building windows for ... Westerly.

The Westerly Owners website will be another good source of knowledgeable advice, probably with an article from someone who has done the job.

window seal

not a big job if it's just the seal, probably available from trafager yachts for less than a tenner, and a couple of hours work in and out, probably need another pair of hands to refit complete window.

Some Westerly boats use a window unit which is sealed into the baot and the glazing sealed within the unit and some have the glazing sandwhiched into the
fibreglass using an extruded seal with alumimium frames clampig inside and out with lots of through screws.

Send pictures of your windows to this company who probably made them in the first place.

Leaking Windows

I removed and replaces all my windows 2 years ago. I have the address for the new rubbers somwhere, There is a U shaped rubber within the alu seal which perishes,

The frames are sealed with sikaflex on the outside , a then once the windows are fitted trim eccess U shaped black window seal and apply a bead of marine grade silicone selant.

You will need a good dry day. lol. and take care not to damage the linings or lose any of the captive screws, well worth it not had a leak yet.
