Thinking of buying a Westerly Riveria.

Two questions please;

How quiet is the engine?
As anyone had problems (and cured them) with the windows in the deck saloon?

I think it all depends on the particular boat you're looking at. The standard engine was a 28hp Volvo Penta 2003, but most buyers specified the optional 43hp 2003T. But, after 30 years, quite a few boats will have had new engines fitted, so the noise level will depend on which engine is fitted, and how well it's been sound-proofed.

The windows originally leaked, but apparently the windscreen design was changed in late 1992 to try to stop the leaks. The large glazed area was a bit of a technical challenge for Westerly. The Westerly owners' website says "The design of the coachroof differed from the usual practice, by being a cantilever, which meant that no weight was taken on the windows. This is a terrific theory, but the resulting stresses mean that the boat is not the same shape in the water as out, so that doors never open or close when ashore, if properly adjusted for being afloat." Apparently a decent rigger can make modifications which help.

There are reports that the Riviera doesn't sail particularly well. And, from my purely personal view, I don't think it's an attractive boat.

Whichever engine is in there is a noisy one, the question is how well insulated is the engine bay. And if it's not very well insulated that can be relatively easily remedied. Leaking windows also can usually be remedied. Worry about the condition of the hull, age and condition of the sails and rig, age and condition of the engine itself, do the bunk cushions need replacing, does the canvas work need replacing, do the head linings need replacing (it is a Westerly after all...)

You can join the Westerly Owners Association forum for free.

Have you read the details on the Westerly Owners Web Site on the Riveria?
Riviera 35 - Westerly-Wiki

There is an active member Geoff Allen who has a Riveria and you can send a message direct to him. Here are all the posts tagged with #riveria. https://westerly-owners.co.uk/peepso-activity/?hashtag/riviera/ Even if you are considering a Westerly, it is worth joing the Westerly Owners Association for £15 as there are plenty of additional benefits ranging from access all the members who have Riverias and their group insurance policy with a discount and extra cover included for free.

I am also sending you a Private Message with the Westerly BoatLine member for the Riveria. This should only be available to members of the Association, but feel they would be your best point of contact.
