We have owned No 22 from new in 1999. I have not heard of any problems with the mast.
The defects on our boat have all been relatively minor. PM me if you want more details.
I have been very impressed with the massive laminate thickness and the quality of the GRP work.
The guy who used to run Alba Yacht Charters in Scotland took an interest in our 33 and told us that she is better finished than Halberg Rasseys. He rated Westerlys much higher which was interesting to hear from a man who had both makes in his charter fleet.
The Ocean 33 is fun and very reassuring. Matt Sheean (sp?) in the YW test report raved about her and we have not been disappointed. The deck and cockpit layout work very well for sailing (and it is a big cockpit for relaxing too.
They are excellent boats if you enjoy sailing and the accommodation I think is fine. The heads is excellent at sea. She is definitely a cruising boat but one which is really fun and fast to sail.
We had Ocean 33 No 2, it was a superb boat and never had any problems with the mast, not did I ever hear of anyone else having problems. It had a a big rig giving excellent light airs performance but did need reefing relatively early compared with similar sized boats, on the other hand she used to romp past most of them.
I would agree that the finish was better than Halbergs, the interior woodwork was a real craftsmen job
You could talk to Ian Cochrane at XW Rigging at Haslar he supplied and fitted all the rigging for late model Westerlies, if there had been problems he would know. Also maybe talk to Selden who supplied masts.
