We have two batteries in our Centaur under the starboard quarter berth. They are simply resting in a GRP tray that's part of the hull and strapped down. Is there a benefit to putting them in a battery box if we can? Space is really tight - about 25mm above the terminal posts.

Batteries without boxes under bunks are common. My newish Bavaria has 3*95Ah AGMs under the saloon berth and another under the forecabin berth for the bow thruster and windlass. Just make sure there is nothing stowed in there that could fall on them.

I can see an advantage to having covers on the battery in case something metallic gets on them by intent or storm, but no other reason to box them in. The cases are pretty tough, so it would take something heavy and sharp at a decent velocity to damage them
