West Mersea - visitor moorings

In future the enourmous cost of running two launches will presumably be offset by the income from the new mooring charges? Is this what the new mooring charges really cover?

No, they are reportedly being leived to pay for the buoys in the Mersea Quarters and perhaps a fuel barge and a pump out facility some time in the future.

In point of fact I do make donations to Clubs whose facilities I use.

Fed up with the level of petty name calling to which this topic has descended. Leaving now - can't be bothered to waste any more time on this.

So Tim if as i stated earlier the clubs need launches, let them pay & collect a fee for services rendered to visitors

So why is there a charge in Pyefleet?

I've been anchoring in Pyefleet for the last 20 years or so, and occasionally pick up a mooring. I wasn't aware of a charge for the moorings although, in my 'green' days, I was persuaded to part with £2 by a character who then disappeared up towards Mersea. I've always had a sneaking suspiscion I'd donated to a beer fund.
I presume there's no charge for anchoring?

My copy of East Coast Rivers mentions that the Oyster Company may charge for the use of the moorings. 10 years or so ago the charge was, IIRC, £5 and they gave a recipt so it does sound like you might have been 'had'. In the past there have been similar stories about indivduals seeking money for the use of moorings at WM thus my unease about recipts not being provided when I last visited.

I don't resent companies such as this charging as they won't get any benefit of visitors using thier bar, etc. and they don't need to take into account that thier members might be enjoying free hospitality at other clubs!

PS - as far as I know there are still no charges for anchoring on the east coast

Friend of mine picked up a mooring in Pyefleet last weekend and got charged £10. He has a 28ft Moody.

Whilst I can accept the argument (up to a point) for mooring charges in Mersea Quarters to pay for bouyage, launch, etc etc as re-iterated in this very thread I do not understand how that pertains to Pyefleet.

And why did he have to pay £10 for a 28footer?

Pyefleet moorings

Worth flagging that the 'owner' of the moorings in Pyefleet resides on a boat on one of the moorings and actively seeks payment well into the evening (pulled along one boat at 9.45pm on Friday 1/7/11). He tried to justify a tenner on the basis that they had just renewed the moorings and there was a tap ashore. I commented that the West Mersea 'effect' was spreading and he reassured me that they were "even more expensive" :( Might I suggest that users of the moorings ask for a recipt which identifies the recipient of the cash, this seems to cause a little difficulty.

There is still plenty of room to anchor further and the moorings do not seem to have spread. (I had a tired crew and an early start so took the easy option).

and to add insult to injury "someone" representing the Colchester Oyster Company is attempting to charge £10 for an overnight stay on a buoy in the Pyefleet Creek, where there is no club, are no facilities & no access ashore.

Makes West Mersea really good value!

Suggest you take a copy of this document & adapt as req.

Er......not quite so abolute as some of the above posts suggests. Now also competition in the water taxi stakes... Lady Grace on 07791859624

Can you expand upon this please? Certainly my experiance is that if the launch is operating you will be invited to pay.

Unless things have changed I didn't think the new water taxi operated much later than the WMYC service so it wasn't much help if you wanted to spend the evening ashore.

EDIT - as this thread has resurfaced, an East Coast Forumite promised to make represenatations on behalf of yacht clubs which didn't charge for using thier moorings. I wonder if their members can look forward to free mooring this year?

Right....
I'm not a yacht club member....... The water taxi I mentioned operates flexibly for her customers, & is not constrained in the same manner as the yacht club launches have become. She is available for all, & can & does adapt accordingly. As such is also available for non yacht club members/visitors.
Call her & ask.....
Also although many of the mooring owners came together to charge for visitor usage: in practical terms it does not always happen like that. It will vary dependant on which/whose mooring you are on & when. A bit of chance, perhaps?

Noted, thanks.

May I ask which moorings are likely to result in a free night's stay?

Just want to add I used the Water Taxi last season as WMYC launch hinted that I shouldn't be using the WMYC launch as I now had a mooring at Mersea (Bearing in mind I just bought the boat and this was the second time I used the launch to get my gear off).

Even though I offered to pay the normal rate as per visiting Yachtsmen I was told this was against the rules and visitors or members only for the launch. I was then told I wouldn't be able to use the launch again.

So next time I called the Water Taxi and she was great. In between ferrying tourists around she was picking me and others up.

Stacy was always friendly and ready to assist. I'm gladly going to pay my subscription to her taxi service this season.
