West Mersea - visitor moorings

Quite a few Deben desperadoes in amongst them. Though should the West Mersea lot venture our way, our visitor moorings are still free :)

My sympathy lies with the poor old boatman on YC1 who are going to take the flack and to try and collect the money. Some could even pack it in.

I do hope that some kind of sign/buoyage in the Quarters area or somewhere will indicate to cruisers that charges are now liable to support them. I can foresee much unpleasantness which again will suggest, rightly or wrongly, that Mersea does not welcome visitors.

If I was asked £5 for a lunchtime stop I think I would just let the mooring go and find somewhere else. Probably never to return.

I think it is not too late . Once bad feeling about takes hold it is very difficult to get it back.

If for example Mersea started with a £5 overnight charge for all boats it would largely be accepted. This seems to be the general feeling of this forum. It could then be reviewed at the end of the season - particularly to see if the real problem of abuse of moorings has been overcome.

Have we ever had a vote on the East Coast Forum ?

Does anyone know how to do it ?

The chap I spoke to took the time to explain the situation to me so it would be a shame if people did become abusive to them. I also got the strong impression he was expecting people to cast off once they were informed of the charge.

However, they really ought to give out receipts when taking peoples' money.

Indeed! Go to ANY marina, or for that matter ANY reputable harbour that charges a fee for mooring, and a receipt is always issued. Otherwise how are you able to prove income for tax purposes? A pound to a penny receipts are obtained religously for every 1/10th of a litre of diesel used! Surely the West Mersea "4 Businesses and a Yacht Club" syndicate have not obtained a special dispensation for how this income is treated?

I think we should be told! ;)

West Mersea

So - if everyone has calmed down
Should there be a poll on who will actually avoid WM?
Me - I sail on a friends boat from WM and also arrive as a visitor on my own. I have seen both sides of the place - welcoming sometimes and Victor Meldrew like misery others.
I do n't mind paying but a tenner is a bit steep for a swinging mooring and will probabaly head to the comforts of Bradwell and the Green Man which would represent better value for money (IMHO). Are they going to charge competitors in the local races, that would defiantly put people off if they were hosting say the wallet shield.

A few comments on what seems to be becoming a liitle heated:

Serious:

With respect, none of you have any idea of the problems of balancing the wishes of our members, the economics of running our launches and indeed the time issues noted by Tim. We have -we see the numbers and the problems (and we suffer from them too!) I'd love a late launch...it dont work. And can I point out gently that the B'Sea taxi has had its problems

Its worth saying again -WMYC are merely the collecting agents because we run the launches- we own relatively few of the moorings and this decision is the owners collective wish. please do not make us the "wicked stepmother"

Jocular:

And a small "stir" in what is intended to be a concilliatory post - if our club is so horrible, how come so many clubs organise cruises and visits to us? !!

Proportionate:

Come on..its not life threatening....lets enjoy our cruising this summer. You are welcome here and we know we are welcome at your home ports! Cheers!

I suspect that your 'welcome' at other clubs will not be quite so warm if you expect visitors to pay at your club but for you to use others' free of charge!

I can't see anything in any of my 'Mersea colleagues' posts that would give any impression that 'we expect visitors to pay at our club but for us to use others free of charge'. I don't expect to use others facilities free and neither to my knowledge does anyone else.

You will therefore be making a voluntary payment/donation to commerical organisations/clubs which don't charge for the use of thier moorings? :D

I think the only FREE OF CHARGE overnight moorings I have experienced were the waiting buoys outside St Kats. Queenborough, Orford, and the various marinas visited all charged.
