west epoxy pack B?

hi, the gloke that's doing my boat says "get a "B" pack kit off the net"

ok so where do i go, anyone got any suppliers, the price to beat is 94 quid... or there abouts.

and are screwfix any good for brass screws? the last ones (from B&Q) just snapped.

I don't know about the epoxy, but I just got a few bits & pieces from Screwfix. Prices seem good 1 1/2 X 8 solid brass £2.85 per 100, £13.52 for 500, but beware of about £6 per order packing/handling. Over £50 it's free.

Brass is very soft. If you don't use a pilot hole, you will break pure brass screws. There are tougher brass-coloured screws around, but they're just a few microns of brass plate over mild steel - just the job for a marine environment!

Beware of cheap brass screws! Some are not brass at all, but brass plated steel, others are knocked out cheaply on knackered old machinery in sweatshops in various former British colonies. The worst ones come as part of a pack with cheap brass door handle sets. They have very little metal for their head size and snap off if you look at them sideways, even after drilling pilot holes. It's not unusual for them to have slots that are off-centre, missing altogether, cut too deep causing half the head to shear off, or even sawn by hand. DON'T BUY CHEAP SCREWS, you will regret it, especially if they are holding important bits of your boat together.

How about trying silicon bronze screws instead of brass. They are dearer but are stronger (mind you you still need to drill correct pilot and clearance holes) and stand up to marine conditions much better.

Try www.angliastainless.co.uk. Whilst they do stainless fastenings they took over Combwich's business who imported and retailed silicon bronze screws.

Brass Screws

Screwfix ones are as strong as you'd expect brass screws to be. I've been slowly working my way through a Screwfix 500 selection box over the last few years. No breakages yet.

BTW, don't equate soft with weak. In steels this idea holds true, however soft Aluminium Bronze (AB2) is stronger than mild steel which is considerably harder.
