Well! We already knew this but now it's confirmed.

Re: Well! We already knew this but now it\'s confirmed.

Your conclusion isn't warranted by the information in the link. What it says is that the cameras are not effective in reducing crime. If they are no good for tracking criminals they are unlikely to be any better for tracking the rest of us.

Re: Well! We already knew this but now it\'s confirmed.

At least the detection rate should improve when we 'criminals' park where we shouldn't for a few seconds/minutes. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Hi not sure this fits in with PBO forum but to contribute to the debate not sure what the figures really mean anyway. It says only 3% of crimes were solved by CCTV, but I also belive the detection rate is less than 20% anyway, so another way to look at this is over a seventh of the detections are down to CCTV.
Also the point it makes is that it is time consuming to collect and analyse this data at the moment but with automatic systms coming on line it will be made easier.
I have no problems with CCTV and think if used effectively will be an increasingly effective tool - but I could be wrong

Re: Well! We already knew this but now it\'s confirmed.

My latest PC package automatically finds faces and removes red-eye. With reasonable effort it should be possible for CCTV footage to be examined automatically to reduce the amount that has to be viewed by humans. It has probably happened already and the spooks are using it.

We recently had a boat stolen from the pontoon and abandoned further down river. Police said the CCTV was useless as despite having infrared lights nothing could be made out clearly at night. He went on to say that CCTV in general is pretty useless. The toerag was caught because he cut himself smashing his way into the boat he pinched, then went on to leave blood all over the boats. Police had his DNA.

I can never understand this... when I worked at one of the UK major airports their CCTV was television quality. Is it really that much more expensive to install ameras which would give a useable image?
