Well there goes my mooring then....

Re: Why the Welsh

[ QUOTE ]
I've a vested interest, being Welsh, and major parts of my family are native Welsh speakers

Re: Welsh Language impact

I take your point but that's not how I read it at all. I do appreciate the problems that an influx of outsiders cause and it's no different to many other parts of the UK where locals are priced out of the market by outsiders moving in. The difference is that the authorities are afraid they will take the language with them when they go. If the language base is so weak that that would have an effect then tcm is probably right but there is a counter arguement in the document that the jobs created by the development will allow more locals to stay. The Llyn does depend heavily on tourist income but so do many other parts of the UK. If the Llyn peninsular was the only place in Wales where Welsh was spoken then he may have had a point but it's not and he doesn't.

Still can't see why it's the "bloody" Welsh language.

I sympathise with your position regarding your mooring and hope there is some sort of solution that works for you. It does seem as if the development is a long way from a done deal, particulary when there is speculation that the costs will outweigh the benefits so probably no need to panic just yet.

Re: Why the Welsh

most if not all small rural villages and towns in south, mid and north wales have been swamped by 'outsiders' who not only dont speak welsh, the overwhelming majority of the incomers dont want too or attempt too learn it (and why should they you think ..... dead language etc...)
this influx hasnt killed of the native language, maybe diluted it in numerical terms if compared with local english speakers, but not killed it off, why should pwllheli be different ? it isnt a heritage cymraig bastion is it ?

A few words to mull over if this applies to you. Children of English only speaking parents, (I assume this is you) who are taught in Welsh and learn English as a secondary subject do well until they reach secondary education. When this happens they have difficulty with the Welsh language and their education suffers as a result. This is only revealed aftr the first year or so in secondary education. Ten or fisteen years ago, the school inspectorate in England did their inspection result: half the schools were below standard. The Welsh inspectorate did their inspection and found very little wrong. When they were asked how there could be such an enormous difference beteen the two countries, the Welsh inspectorate said they had done theirs in a different way!!?? BOL

Must disagree with you there. The Welsh medium school in my area draws almost 70% of their pupils from English speaking families and turns in results as good as most English medium schools.

Education

Is that a Welsh inspectorate? Who is doing the inspecting? By what method. At what level are the GCSEs being taken with what proportion of the pupils taking higher and more importantly what proportion taking the basic level.

The figures do not tell the true story this can only be determined by assessment of individual pupils. Not long after the national curriculum came in, I noticed my children's reports consisted of well done at most things. There were no downsides. A wonderful change from school reports over the previous forty years. I questioned the headmistress on this and she said they were all doing very well. I said, Well he (the son in question at the time) must be a lazy little devil in something because he's a lazy little devil at home in some things. She assured me all was well. Had to be for the curriculum and the teacher's well-being.

Didn't stop 5,000 teachers retirng early on ill-health gounds in one winter in the early nineties.

I found out I was right and they were not getting the education they should have been. I managed to catch them in time and with hard work they did well

They lowered the standards and it looks like more are doing better. I think it's sad for the children and we are letting another generation down.

Which school are you talking about?

Re: Education

Wife does exam invigilation at the loacl school, they are doing there GCSE's at the moment, and the number that have to have a reader!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
This applies to a big number, thay have a reader to read the questions as they are assesed with a reading age of 8, and they are 16. They also are allowed 25% more time to complete there exam.
What happens when they start work, do the employer's have to take on readers for them ?? A bit like taking someone along to your driving test to read the number plate for you as you have bad eyesight.

Re: Education

Do not quite understand as this thread has popped back and forth a little>>

Welsh kids need a reader, or English kids not being able to read English?

If the latter that is disgusting and just a little bit frightening. If Welsh, then nearly as bad as not being able to work in English will be a severe handicap in life.

Do parents not read books with their children any more?

Re: Education

maybe number plates look like they are welsh words to you but in fact they are not - they are identity markings
and reading number plates is an eyesight test not a test of reading literacy

Re: Education

They are English, and have a reader for doing there english exam, and then get a certificate of the same standard as someone who did not need a reader.
This is a stnadard part of the exam spec, not just our area.
You can hire someone on the internet to write your projects and course work, someone reads the questions for you, makes you woander why we bother at all.

Re: Education

If you can have a reader in a English exam which test your literacy, why not have a reader to test your eyesight in a driving test, must have equality in this PC world.

Re: Education

times must have made the education system move on quite a bit by the sounds of it
in my day the day started with a shoe inspecion, and if they were dirty (e.g. after kicling a bal around) you used to get caned, then lessons, if you didnt do you homework or didnt get enough of you vocab correct, or didnt know the set poetry, or got your spelling wrong ........ etc .......... yes got caned.
in the afternoon the same thing happened, a day was a week....... a week was a month and a term was purgatory.
sounds like school is a piece of piss now -
wasnt like that in my
'you were lucky'
'in my ........'
