Listen Mate in My best Wenglish "Mae mind yn boggledd!". You,ve seen my Cafe in PD Marina. So they gave planning for the Caf but I couldn,t put signs on it saying "Hello were a Caf" so I had to make "Temporary A frame thingys to stick outside so people would know it wasn,t just a toilet block and showers! "They" decided though that it was ok to stick gaudy neon Caf Open signs in the windows! Bleedin Mental. Thousands spent on Bylinguel signs, tasty ones isn,t it, had to be binned! So don,t think they are going to notify you. Who are you anyway ?you just bring money and jobsis into the area. Dafydd Iwan and his Plaid Cymru mates commissioned a survey into how the latest developement in The Marina might damage The Welsh Language, the mind boglgledd again! Anyway by the time "They" sort it out we can make a new series of The Prisoner in Port Meirion. "I am not a number" Well I bagsy No. 1, cos you,ve got a Cat you can be No. 2. No I,m NOT going mental but all the planning brigade in this neck of the woods are stark staring MAD,MAD,MAD. Calm down I feel a RANT coming on. So don,t worry about it Nos Da, KAWASAKI!

Pwellheli people need to grow up!! £20,000,000 a year into an area that was dying 15 years ago. The bloody Welsh language would be dead now if it wasn't for the English visitors to the Llyn every weekend.

It is beyond belief that they object to something which will bring jobs and investment into an area of high unemployment on the grounds of its "impact on the Welsh language". Could you imagine the people of Liverpool blocking all the dockland developments because it threatened an impact on the Scouse accent?
I'd recommend the Welsh get down the Albert Dock this weekend.

the Scouse accent is not the Welsh language. So what if they carry out a language impact assessment? I don't understand what harm it does. If you think it's a waste of money, so is most goverment. Why is Welsh wasted money particularily offensive?

um cos it's wasting more per relevant capita, and the value of the ultimate goal of retaining or even expanding the welsh language at govt expense is questionable.
I mean, other languages, far more widespread (like er latin, perhaps) go down the tubes with nary a wimper. Teaching kids ONLY to speak welsh as some are is strange, almost cruel in reducing their options later. It's not like spending money on the arts or sports or loads of other stuff, where a few are doers and loads are spectators - the spending is entirely consumed only by those who speak welsh.
 
I think Woofy's point is that there are currently swinging moorings at Pwllheli, which many people prefer, and they will disappear to make room for the expansion.

So what do they care? I don't think you've got the hang of his governtment business at all. Also I don't follow your point about spectators. This thread appears to be full of people who enjoy watching people speak Welsh, even to the extent of putting up bilingual signs and then taking them down again. You can't walk into a swimming baths or council offices in London without walking past signs in ten languages... why pick on the Welsh?

ps Latin took a couple of thousand years to wear out. Some would say it still hasn't. You know, credo in unum deum, pater omnipotens etc etc.
 
As I understand it, the expansion will create very few jobs, something like 19 was mentioned. If the expansion reduces the number of swinging moorings then it can only be a bad thing in reducing the accessability of sailing to people who cannot afford the ludicrous prices these palces charge.

As a Scotsman living in Wales I agree that teaching kids only in Welsh is, in my opinion, wrong but most schools in our area are bilingual (not sure about up North Wales) The language is very strong in this area and all the better for it. My daughter (age 4) goes to Welsh school and speaks both Welsh & English with a bit of Spanish thanks to Dora the Explorer.

Well that's interesting. One of the oldest European languages survives because those who don't speak it choose to spend their leisure time where it is spoken. Sorry, can't see the logic. And why is it the "bloody" Welsh language?

TCM, imagine if the roles were reversed and there were so many Welsh people living in England who only spoke Welsh (or Punjab or Urdu or Romanian or whatever) that it was decided not to bother keeping the English language alive. I'm sure that would go down well. Same thing really.

I don't know anyone who can only speak Welsh. I know quite a few people who only spoke Welsh at home when they were growing up and learned their English at school and in the playground and at least two families where one parent used only Welsh with the kids and the other only English to raise truly bi-lingual children.

I can't speak Welsh and I get very annoyed when those who can treat me as "less Welsh" because of that. I do think we need to keep the zealots in check, generally they do the Welsh language more harm than good, but for goodness sake keep the heritage of the Welsh language alive.

Also, let's not confuse the issue too much with the language thing. There will be environmental impact sudies, traffic movement studies, people movement studies infrastructure reports etc. etc. It's what local authorities do - in any language.

ah but thos other languages are fine and dandy aren't they, loadfs of people speakem, and loads omorte elsewhere. But the welsh are fighting the tide - instead of just speaking in that language as they want with a few sign and stuff, the govt workers in wales seem to have to be fluent wlesh speakers! Or they do at the welsh development agency. Whereas it would be far more development-orientated if they spoke Manadarin or west coast American at the welsh development agency to get lots of investment.

Well said Jinks. I'm in a similar situation to you. both my children went to Welsh schools and both enjoy a rich bilingual culture. I'm afraid I agree that the Welsh language is a far more important issue than a few extra marina berths or the views of a few English philistines, even if they are fellow yachtsmen. Wales offers a warm welcome to all manner of visitors, but don't mess with the culture boyos. Several generations of English have tried but it still survives!

I think he meant, and I don't want to put words in someone else's mouth, that if it was not for tourism the area would have become very deprived and many of the Welsh would have had to move away to find work. That is how I understood it.

Speaking to locals, it is not the language so much as the increased prices of the local housing stock. There are many boat owners who keep boats in the marina who have also bought local houses as holiday homes. The young locals have no chance of getting on the housing ladder and have to move away to work. Thus, the connection to the Welsh language.

I actually think it is fair enough to be honest.....

I am going to lose my mooring, I like my mooring.

It is a semi drying (not great but cheaper) in very deep mud, excellent security, you can not walk to it at low water. My boat is in view of the HM and marina office so at least there are people watching over her. The area is extremely well sheltered, hence the marina plans.....

Speaking to the harbour master a few months ago, the location they propose to move me to is hidden from view of the main harbour on hard sand so security is going to be pretty poor.

I looked at the plans last weekend in the HM office. When they build this new marina, another 360 berths or near, there is going to be a bottle neck, the two marinas and the moorings will all converge on a channel no more than 75ft wide.

Can anyone else see the carnage on bank holiday weekends?

It is no secret to those on here that I do not like marinas and think they are a blot on the landscape, ok, Pwllheli is not very pretty as things go, but yet again we are losing more moorings around the coast to make more money for, who exactly?

Here is another thought. Many on here will also know I have serious spine problems. If I was put on a marina it would make life harder for me. The walk from the far end of the existing marina to the gate knackers me. Yet from the car to dinghy, to boat I have to lug bags hardly any distance at all. Off topic a bit, but I bet I am not the only one like this!

Actually, they are not so much fighting the tide as winning. The population of welsh speakers is actually rising, and this is due to many things, such as introduction of Welsh TV (S4C), radio stations, Welsh language lessons in school, etc.

The way it was done is being used as a model by countries like NZ Maori's (successfully, they also started native language TV stations, and taught bi-lingually), and Ireland, who even though they introduced compulsory passing of Irish Gaelic at schools (if you don't pass the Gaelic exam, you don't pass any other subject!) they are losing the battle.

I've a vested interest, being Welsh, and major parts of my family are native Welsh speakers
