...I had planned all the meals to be on board during this, for me, laying up week, However tonight's planned chicken stir fry had to be cancelled once I opened the chicken "boutis" from AB. Yuk! What a pong. Ah well it is actually the 12th their BB date however I had kept them at 0c or lower since wednesday.

Ochi problemo, quick shave and off to see Sue and Alexi. Place in darkness and a new sign "open every day except Sunday & Monday" OK they deserve the extra day (Sunday) off. So off I go for a wander. Pass George's take-away to be accosted by a guy apologising fo blocking me in with his car. Must have been a case of mistaken identity I think. Gerekos Fish Taverna looks to be in darkness (0915pm) so wander on. Pari's FT open but somehow I always find it a bit clinical and cold. Decide that a take away from George's is my best option so head there. Just as I reach Gerekos he walks out of the side door and asks me what I would like. "Fish would be nice" says I (you don't EVER ask for meat in Gerekos!) To which he responds "Are you Scottish? No says I. "English then?" Yes says I "You ever been to Scotland" Yes says I, it always rains. "Me I like Scottish people. Me I always put Scottish first then English" Fine says I and buggers off to George's for a take away chicken & chips at €3.20

I won't be visiting Gerekos again.

I thhink you just need to humbly accept your position in life. :p On the other hand ,you could apply to become an honorary Scot. Send me €200 and I will send you the necessary paperwork.
On a serious note ,I would have asked for a reason---he may have a very good one! I have met English (AND Scottish) expats in Greece who are less than good ambassadors for their respective countries.

Hi Chas, forgive my ignorance, BUT where is/are you?this place?

Peter

Pop into the little taverna, almost opposite the bucket, with the new plastic screening, food is good and cheap, she even does fish chips and mushy peas, big bottle of beer 1.5 euro, giraffe of wine 2 euro. (any colour) She has a daily special which is bloody good value and eatable.

OUCH... Lefkada Greece. This is a nice Island with half as much rain as Corfu and some realy nice people here> More info will follow if you want any, just ask NICELY

Merry Christmas

Peter

Remember it well We first arrived in Greece there , about 5 years ago If I recall correctly.
I was a bit apprehensive about checking in etc. but the port police were very pleasant and helpful, and I have good memories of the place.....except...it poured non stop ,so God knows what Corfu would have been like!!
Are you in the Marina there? Many liveaboards around?

Merry Christmas to you and yours...-7 Deg here and falling.!!!

Hello Chas,
we were just like you about checking in as you said, the post police were most helpful. Yes we have booked into the Marina for the winter. We shall be here until March at least. We are a CAT and got a huge discount! 50% so paid the mono-hull rate. As for live aboards --YES lots last night we went to Chicken Bills for a supper and a Quiz night 34 at one sitting a great night out. So many things organised ans all usualy done by the live-aboards with a little help from one ot two landlubbers..

Kondokali

The last time we wintered in Gouvia Bay,( before the marina) Takis was the only place open. Tony had a little tiny village store and the baker had a wood-fired oven and his matrimonial disputes overlapped into the roadway.
Taki (Gerekos) whose wedding we attended in 1976, was a genial host. He helped us celebrate bonfire night in his back garden and organised the 3 lambs we spit roasted.
At Easter, Vassili and Victor, the engineers (!) invited everyone to their house for a big barbecue. They had supplied us with free shore power over the winter via about 150 metres of cable, hidden from the gauleiters of the port police.
It was a very friendly village then.
At the southern end of the village was a small kafeneon with dancing every night. One live-aboard was Jose, a Portuguese ex-ballet dancer, who regular danced to cheers while a motley crowd drank retsina at 20 drax a litre.
Heady days before charter flights and flotillas.
Don't knock the Greeks. It is the northern European on a short visit who has corrupted their souls.
