Happily at anchor and storm comes through so thought best check anchor . Any way glad I did just As I got up l could see a yacht drifting on a collision course with me it was a close one as had to start the engine to get out of the way. A few boats were caught out and drifting . Bloody typical its the first time at anchor with the wife and I have been told that’s the last?.
Another one to add to the nautical night mare book .

That reminds me of the very witty writing of Dave Selby in PBO. In one of his articles he explained that the usual way to leave Newtown IOW was backwards, in the middle of the night, with the anchor dragging behind.

Having spotted a ominous black cloud out in the Thames estuary, ran for cover into a sheltered creek and dropped anchor with lots of chain.
The storm found us and the rain made visibility out the window nil. Shortly after the wind hit could hear a curious thump thump noise.
On investigation it was the chain being pulled over the windlass gypsy.
Started both engines and took the weight of the boat off the anchor. It was all over a few minutes later.

Another way to look at it would be that it’s now essential to anchor there again and prove how delightful it really is.

I‘ve always found it to be excellent holding in the creek with thick clay
It depends where you go. My previous anchor, a delta, worked well everywhere I went, except Newtown. The large amount of anchoring churns up the bottom and can make setting the anchor a real challenge.

I had exactly that experience, Delta anchor too... with the same result on my wife that @jamie langstone noticed on his! We've not been back since.

While respecting that Newtown, rather than anchoring, is the headline of this thread, may I whisper that I swapped my Delta for a Mantus. Since then, no problems setting, ever.

Now for a friendly tease. One of our antipodean contributors frequently points out that the holding power of the Mantus is no more than that of a Delta. In this case, not true. Holding power of Delta in Newtown: usually zero. Holding power of Mantus: more than you’ll ever need in Newtown. Therefore in this use case the Mantus has infinitely more holding power than a Delta :ROFLMAO:.

p.s. may I respectfully comment that U.K. based forumites are also antipodean when viewed from the wonderful place that is Australia ;)

Please Miss, oldgit's dun ankering rong! :ROFLMAO: As you've discovered the gypsy(and windlass) is not intended to take the loads of anchoring.

So what happened to the drifting yacht? ?
They managed to recover the anchor and off they went some where. Another went drifting past and ended up grounded but managed to get them selfs off . Then a small motor boat went past and they managed to sort them selfs out. Another yacht went past and they to managed to recover them selfs but then drove in to the causeway at high tide and went aground . While this was going on I sounded my horn to alert other anchored boats of the drifting boats . All good fun?

We used to be good friends with Ken Abernathy the HM.

He called what you are describing 'pyjama parties' ?
