Thanks for the update and glad the biopsy showed all was okay. I am due a visit to have a mole removed and checked that the wife spotted and has recently appeared on my back. The doctor is sure that it is nothing to worry about and did not recommend a biopsy but stated that if I wanted one, he would submit the paperwork. Having blond hair and blue eyes, I am in the higher risk category and as a young man I spent a lot of time sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing on the water and got a lot of sun burn, also worked in the middle east for a long time. I am going for the biopsy.

Thanks for posting on this as it serves as a reminder that we should take these things seriously and have them checked.

Got the biopsy results yesterday (After 2 weeks, several phone calls and a snotty email).

All clear.

Looks like we caught it in time.

All clear is the best news possible!

Over the years I have had both bad news and good news, in this respect. Very lucky to have survived the bad news event, but incredibly relieved when it is good news.

Be prepared though if removal is required that healing can take a long time, and gets longer as you age. I had 2 "lumps", one a basal cell carcinoma and the other a troublesome wart, removed from my leg on 16 April. One of them is still not quite healed despite regular dressing with a range of healing potients and compression dressings. Nurse says it has healed more quickly and better than she expected! Backs are particularly bad for healing because the skin is always on the move.

However if it needs to go you are better off without it.

My dermatologist advises me to do a 3 monthly full body check against a reference set of photos of moles. The objective is to detect changes early, then to get a proper check out if there are any anomalies.

As Zing says, do a regular check on all your moles and spots.
You don't have to wait for them to start advancing - you can attack them early on as well.
I have a few on my back, and for the last few months have been having Efudix cream applied to them daily, and they are slowly getting smaller / disappearing.
Here is a link - you do need to get a prescription for it though. Here it costs me about GBP 50 for a tube, and I am on my 2nd tube now, but it is well worth it.

Efudix 5% Cream - Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) - (emc)

From personal experience, only treat small areas at any one time. The inflammation it causes is unpleasant, albeit effective

Got a mole that I took to the Dr. last week. He looked at it and gave it the "Keep monitoring, it looks OK to me, but send me a pic. in 3 months."
Great.
Next statement from my guy was, "Your bowel cancer 6 monthly scan's due about now isn't it?"
Gotta laugh.
