Weird happenings at Mercury Marina

Be interested to know a bit more about your alarm etc Gary

A couple of years ago we thought someone was using our hot tub at our holiday home and eldest (who is niw a Master of Electronic Engineering) adapted an old webcam and mounted it above tne decking but didnt connext it to anything but he put a grain of wheat flashing led in the body of the camera so anyone looking at it thought it was live.

Dows you marina not have cctv covering the basin ? At ours they seem to have them everywhere and coupled to that we did hear the night watchman on his rounds at least twice a night. I thoughtsuch security would be facrored into your berthing costs ?

Can't give too much information regarding the alarm for hopefully obvious reasons. It's a standard car alarm with motion and door detectors with the vibration setting turned off and no immobiliser connections. You have to be careful what battery you connect it to too else supply fluctuations when the battery charger kicks in when you're not at the boat sets some of these car alarms off too. A separate battery may be required in some installations.

The GPS tracker is one of these hidden away behind a panel.. you just need to make sure you can top up the SIM card without needing to remove it. presuming you'd use a pay as you go sim card. Also, there's a setting that stops the repeat alert as that will use up all the credit in no time at all.

I've linked the tracker to one of the alarm outputs that issue a 12v signal when the alarm sounds. actually, it might have been a -12v signal, I can't recall. Anyways, what that achieves is being able to set the car alarm to silent alert (you can leave the alarm sounding if you prefer it makes a noise but not great for your other marina folk if you get false alarms) so i receive a txt if the alarm goes off. I can then call the marina staff to go round to the boat and hopefully catch them in the act

Thanks Gary. Understood.

Eldest is itching to get his teeth into a project and actually built a marine gps with tidal flow data for his masters - apparantly components are cheap as chips if you know what you are doing ..... so ill get him on the case !

"hopefully catch them in the act"....... I think you know me well enough to know that if I had the "space, power, cash etc etc for this type of equipment", I would DEFFINATELY go for the "kill them in the act by drowning, gassing or anchor round the neck" accessory!!!!.... that's the advantage of T.M. in the garden next to the shed, various tools of torture very close to hand when dealing with unwanted garbage !!!!

I recall when pinching VW badges was the vogue someone was electrocuted when an owner had wired his badge up to the battery and basically charged it with electricity.... not suggesting that as a solution of course !

Hi,

We was on B2 pontoon. I've attached the link to the thread that was run at the time about it. I also had quite a few PM's from well know posters on here saying they'd had very similar issues.

:)

That thread is 3 years old & about potential building on or around the marina & nothing about security or not taking your complaints seriously ???

If you did have security issues then I am not surprised as B is very close to a large company with lots of saily boats that causes mahem wherever they are whether it be around the marina or out in the solent.

I am a berth holder only at PS and that is all, suggest you go back for a visit as they seem to have improved a lot since you have left by the sounds of it but my advice is to stay away from B and move closer to the shops.

Correct....... The post is over 3 years old and yes we did have a security issue (as other berth holders did) so sorry if it appears I'm calling PS, just reporting what happened.

In fairness we haven't been back as we are totally smitten being berthed on the Hamble and have no intention of returning to PS. Difference as Gary has pointed out, the guys in the office at Mercury haven't dismissed the concerns and will up patrols to hopefully stop any issues.

:)
