Whilst irrelevant to the situation described, it must have been quite a surprise to Fridtjof Nansen to discover that the phenomenon of 'dead water', previously considered to be a bit of a sailors' yarn, could reduce the speed of the Fram from 6-7 knots to a mere 1.5 knots - and that when encountered it could be rather difficult to escape.
