hello all first time useing the message forum,

tried to post a previous message but dont think that it worked

can anybody give me advice as to what weight a shetland 4+2 would be with engine and trailer i have been quoted once at 1700kg but i thought this seemed a little much as shetland book says the boat on its own weighs 1100kg
its a 88 shetland 4+2 on a twin axel roller trailer with a 90 evinrude on the back
any help on this would be a great help
As wanting to take the step up from a speedboat to something bigger with more comfort. would anyone know if a toyota rav4 would pull this combination

thanks for any responce given to this

Hi

I know that screen name from another powerboat forum I think.

dont know the weight of the shetland but the evinrude will be about 130/140kg if its two stroke, the trailer not knowing excatly but I would have thought allow 400/450kg.

I would have thought that your car in actuality will pull it fine but my feeling is that your car may not be rated high enough for the 1600/1700kg weight, thats a fair lump to pull about and from memory the rav 4 is quite a lightweight 4x4 ( i mean that in the nicest possible way -smiley face-)

Hope this helps

Flipping it on its head, I believe the Rav4's recommended towing capacity is 15,000lbs which is around 6800kgs.

Working on these figures, I would say no! You may want to check with your dealer though.

Hope this helps.

hate to be the doubting thomas but the Rav 4 recomended towing limit will not be that high - possibly a hummer or truck might have that limit!

15 - 1600 kg looks about right for the rig - full fuel and family gear might move it up a tough - bare down a touch.

If the trailer brakes are in good nick then a Rav 4 should handle it with due care - ie always brake early! The more people in the Rav the better. It's official manufacturers towing limit is 1500kg (both diesel and vvti)
I towed a very similar rig around for a few years(Plymouth, Brittany, Poole, Solent, Medway) with an Espace - but the Landcruiser handled it a lot better (you could actually brake).

can anyone recomend any other type of boat like shetland one as spec wise
are the shetland boats a good first move into the curiser range

If the Rav4's towing limit is 1500kg then that is all you should tow with it, regardless of whether it can handle it or not. The old bill and your insurance company would both have something to say if there was an accident. Why not out the Toyota and get something bigger! A Shogun would pull 2000kgs all day long as it is rated to 2800 for the swb and 3300 for the lwb. Even a Frontera is rated to 2000kg. Or keep the RAV and buy an old Landie as a second car just for towing. Get a pre 1972 and you won't need to pay for road tax!!!

Yes, I realised that after posting it, I got that off another web site that is quite obviously full of sh1t, perhaps I should have taken the time to read it properly before posting it, unfortunately for some reason you get a time limit on when you can edit what your post, Lord knows why! Every other forum I have been on you can gfo back and change posts as often as you like.

I stayed quiet on the off chance nobody would notice, but thanks for pointing it out/forums/images/icons/wink.gif
