Been out today on Bray stretch

6kph going downstream with engine idling!!

3800 rpm going upstream for 8 kph.

No real problems, but you did not want to be sideways on to the flow! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
A nice relaxing one at Hampton Court for us I think, assuming we can get a mooring as we will probably only head off Saturday arvo... SWMBO is off to Istanbul Monday afternoon, so scuppered our plans a bit... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
don't think it's geeky at all, it's good for us punters to know what it's all about!

Another question if i may though, a couple of posters have stated "back to yellows" - i thought yellows were "stream rising", do they actually just mean "stream a bit faster than normal" ?

Much amusement - the "DE" is a little panel that attaches over the "IN", several lockies have lost theirs hence the apparent illogicality.
(Sorry to spoil the fun). The signs were made so long ago - embossed, with the raised bits painted black - that new ones can't be made; they've forgotten how to do it....

On a serious point, when they've effectively sacked all the lockkeepers (by selling the houses and keeping the salaries low so that no-one in their right mind would work for them) do you think that EA will either dispense with the signs, or leave them up all the time?

On that topic, seeing that the "Country" has today has said what it thinks about NuLabor (Boris For King, etc), that "we" could do the same for EA???

I'm not at all sure that the EA is the real root of our problem, although they are bound to be the visible objective of dissatisfaction.

To me, the real villains of the piece are DEFRA and central government that call the shots and decide on the funding. If you take the trouble to dig a little deeper, read some of the reports and look at the funding issues, its only too obvious that no matter who was actually working for the EA they would have a pretty damned hard time trying to balance all the conflicting interests.

The great sadness in all of this is that the River Thames is not recognised as one of our finest national assets and protected and funded as it should be.

Whilst my instincts are to scream 'foul' regarding the lock houses issue, I also recognise it is an extremely emotional issue and was bound to create a furore. However, if those charged with managing the river genuinely believe it is a step that must be taken is it not just possible that there might be logic in the move? I have a lot more respect for people who are prepared to take unpopular decisions than politicians who, by definition, will sway in the popularity breeze.

As for the results of the elections, is it not more the case that people wanted to give Nulabour a good kicking rather than actually having confidence that much will change?

As mentioned above , in theory as the river starts speeding up you would have the little flap on the yellow boards saying 'IN' creasing and after it has peaked and is falling off you would flip it over to 'DE' creasing ....

However , these little flaps fall in the river very easily and there aren't many left.

You will be pleased to know that when we had delivery of our 'rising sun' signs , we also had a nice new delivery of red and yellow boards ( at least at Tedders ) ...

These aren't nicely embossed like the old ones , just red or yellow with some sticky letters on .

The problem is that one has to go up the chain of command. At least at the ground floor level there is some understanding within EA - even though itself is a vast undertaking. There's no understanding within DEFRA and no point of contact either.

It may well be that EA hoped there would be such an outcry - at least against some of the more silly proposals, that they could go up the chain armed with the objections.

What sticks in my craw is the considerable amount of deceit shown for specific items. For example:-

Boutlers and Chertsey houses are classed as non operational as they are not on the lockside, but bot are within 60yds of the lock. Boulters lockside house is not fit for habitation, so they bought one offfsite.

Old Windsor's second house is on the lockside, but occupied by a relief. If that is sold EA will have to build barriers on that side of the lock as well. It will make the place look like a prison for boaters...

You seem to be interpreting this differently to me.
I did not see the information as to whether they were lockside or not as having any bearing on 'operational need' - simply a statement as to where they are.

As to points of contact, I have been trying to identify a list of MP's whose constituencies include stretches of the river. So far I have failed to find such a list so it may mean a bit of research to compile.
