WEEKEND SAILING FORECAST
Issued: 1330 Thursday 3rd February 2005
FRIDAY
The cold front west of Ireland at midday on Friday will be moving steadily eastwards, as a shallow open wave low passes across northwest Scotland. Overall the flow is going to be from the south west.
For much of England and Wales there will be plenty of cloud. Residual frontal activity over the southeast may produce some rain here, this extending into the eastern Channel. Further drizzle may drift onto the southern coasts of Wales. Expect it to be widespread in such damp conditions.
For western Ireland and Scotland rain will be moving in during the day. This will be edging eastwards with the winds increasing.
Winds will be SW 8-10kt (F2-F3) in the south, becoming SW 15-20kt (F5 occ F6) in the west and north.
SATURDAY
The trough extending through the UK and Ireland on Saturday is expected to persist throughout the day. An occluded front will move into northern Scotland later, with a trough affecting the western and southern coasts of Ireland.
Another cloudy and damp day for much of England. Here expect low cloud and drizzle, with some moderate bursts of rain running along the front, through the Midlands and into northern England.
Scotland and Ireland will be brighter; better visibility here, but also wintry showers. The wintry showers heavier across northern Scotland once the occluded front moves in.
Winds, S-SW 12-15kt (F4-F5) ahead of the trough, becoming NW 10-12kt (F4) behind it, but gusting in showers.
SUNDAY
On Sunday the front will be lying through southern England and East Anglia, moving very slowly westwards. A ridge will have build in across Ireland and Scotland, with a stronger northeast flow forming here.
So plenty of cloud around again across England. Drizzle and light rain is likely, especially in NE England, the Midlands, East Anglia and southeast England, with mist here too. Moderate or poor visibility in the east.
Western England, Wales, northern England, Scotland and Ireland should all be brighter with sunny spells. Best of the sunshine, and visibility in Ireland and western Scotland.
Winds mainly E 7-10kt (F3) to the east of the warm front, mainly NE 15-25kt (F5-F6) to the west of it.
