I need to make a weed wand. Being a twin rudder boat I collect weed and backing up is not always an option. Hence I need a couple of metres from the top of a wind surfer mast or similar. I will then make up a hook from some dia8 inox threaded rod, put some plastic tubing over it and hopefully, heh presto.
There must be loads of fibreglass tubes or the like kicking around, broken. I just need to find some.
Any ideas chaps????????

Get you and your posho weed stick! Ours is wood....

It's also not got plastic tubing over the "active" bit, but some dynema outer chafe cover. Works well.

FWIW, when I had to periodically clean the wind steering paddle (which is outside of the stern) from sargassus, with the boat even at 6-7kt and much reduced arms leverage it was impossible to keep and move a normal diameter boat hook vertical in the water, so using a windsurf mast on your machines going at 10+kt hmmm, I eventually took a stiff and thin wood pole, maybe 15mm dia.

I used to use a Brizzo posh loofah on a extending pole
These days what about a window brush on a pole from the cheapo outlets ?

(Don’t forget the endoscope phone adaptor for when it happens at night maybe )

On my previous boat we had 2 weed wands one traditional one like Flaming is suggesting, but we also made up another one which was a plastic spahetti server attached to the end of a stick - which we actually used much more as it was much quicker at getting stringy bits of weed off as you could twizzle it to catch the weed like you would do spaghetti.

Just curious I took some pictures of a JPK opposite my boat, the rudder leading edge is about 80-100cm from the transom, the shaft about 100cm from the side of the boat, how do you manage to clean these rudder blades while being onboard (supposing no orangutan crew)?

Recently made one following your suggestion, can confirm it works very well :)
