Webasto and Eber have been ripping us off for years

The original post referred to the EU, which is an institution, the thread has now degenerated into something else and this is not the forum for it.

The remark I am referring to was talking about Germans.
I agree that this thread has degenerated, but I'm not prepared to see people make racist comments unopposed.

Very helpful of the EU Commission, both manufacturers were in Europe. I wonder what the position would have been post Brexit with two UK distributors each being supplied from Germany at inflated prices but with no cartel or price fixing as such in the UK.

First of all it is not racist
Secondly-- What is wrong with a bit of racism ?

Whether or not it is racist depends on who the original poster was referring to when they said "typical of their breed"...IF, as seems to be the inference, it WAS referring to the Germans, then I would argue that it would clearly have to be classed as racist..."Definition of racism. 1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race." (Merriam Webster dictionary) or see https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/racism

So, i think the crux of the matter is who exactly was the OP referring to when they used the term "their breed"?

AS to your second point, here are some starters for 10....its a major underlying cause of: prejudice, bullying, war, genocide, inequalities, torture, illegal occupations, mass murders, rape and a whole host of other atrocities.....

But surely you knew that?

When I made that comment it was tongue in cheek & meant as a wind up, it was really a reflection of my age. However, now you have made that comment i might suggest that a bit of racism in this country might solve quite a few underlying problems that are bubbling below the surface. I am not suggesting racism to the extent that you are suggesting, but if we returned to some of the 1960's values we had - not all I admit, because I would not like to be on the receiving end of some of it, then things might improve a bit smartish.
But what this has to do with boat heaters I have no idea; so perhaps it would be better left to the lounge where the mods can delete without spoiling some info on heaters that might be of interest to forumites; who are not in the least interested in debating racism on our streets. Or anywhere else for that matter!!!
So apologies to the Op

Agreed. The problem starts when posters use a boating issue to illustrate their view on Brexit (from either viewpoint) and then gets huffy if somebody challenges it.

Interestingly this out of date issue was nothing to do with boating at all - just the two firms involved also have a marine interest which was not the subject of the enquiry nor the subsequent penalty.

I guessed you were being deliberately slightly "agent provocateur".....I think inherently human beings are naturally distrustful of those who are "different", "not from round here" etc etc...that's our second, mammalian, irrational brain speaking....our third brain, the thinking neo-cortex allows most of us to rationalise these instincts and behave like decent human beings :).....if you grew up in the 60s and 70s in much of the UK, racism and sexism were just an everyday part of the culture - not saying that was right, just how it was

I dont think Eber and Webasto behaved the way they did because they were German....they behaved that way because they are unscrupulous capitalists out to make as much money as possible, in common with a whole host of people of all races and nationalities, the British being prime examples!

Yep definately worth a punt, have one fitted and have ran in my LWB sprinter, just waiting for the tank to run down to fit the fuel tap for a permanant diesel connection.

I've had one for about 6 weeks now. It runs in my workshop for about 8 hours a day.
It took a little while to understand the idiosyncrasies of the controller and the heater coked up with carbon quite quickly after running on red diesel, but after I cleaned out the chamber and changed to kerosene (~70p litre from a local heating oil supplier), it's been running faultlessly and had now had about 70 litres of kerosene through it. I've been really glad of it in this cold weather.
The model I have doesn't have an external temperature monitor and relies on sensing the input air temperature which is ok if you are recycling the air but nowhere near as nice as the Webasto on the boat with its saloon thermostat.

Are we complaining about the EU, or Germany? Let's be clear in our prejudices at least. Leaving the EU will, and is, damaging the Uk economy. Britain should stay in, and use its veto and influence as a major player more readily. Once out the uk will have squandered these opportunities. Non EU people's are flabaggasted at us wanting to leave what they all want to join

It's significant and possibly prescient that after the word "out", you have rendered "uk" in lower case!

Of course they are flabbergasted. They are in a panic trying to work out how they are going to fund their corrupt little game without our billions pouring in. Makes a mockery of any claim that we get out as much as we put in !!

Yes that is right. But racism to the extent of "Paki bashing"- yup - that is out of course it is. The same goes for constant insulting bullying. It is up to those around to use common sense.
In the 70's we had nicknames - One of my Ugandan trainees , Moosa, was quite proud to be called "Paddy" to explain why now would have the mods censoring this post. But he enjoyed the fact that he was one of the team & felt it an honour when we gave him his own nickname. When anyone asked his name he always said "Paddy Moosa".
I would be hauled before a tribunal if I allowed that now. Not by the person in question but by someone else unconnected. How wrong is that?

But the problem is that not being able to make any sensible comment to any debate because it is deemed "racist" is just plain stupid. As a result things such as the Rotheram problem get suppressed. That is where a bit of "racial criticism" should be acceptable.

Sorry to be a pain but i am trying to juggle 3 threads at once here --heaters, racism & Brexit ( partly my fault) I need a workshop heater for a 220M2 floor area. Can you tell me what heater you are referring to please & if it is economical. I cannot work out which one you are talking about !!!!! Might be worth researching a different option to Calor gas & electric.

Wrong forum - Yes

Xenophobic - possibly (of course not without due reason in this case, after all they do have just some history for the insinuated concerns - oh yes "...don't mention the war. I mentioned it once , but I think I got away with it ...")

Racist - no (IMHO)

Now about German firms colluding to hike up the price of boat / night heaters ...

Let those without sin throw the first stone ? :)

Are the Germans a race? If so, I may need to rethink my ethnicity.

Well during our recent history they did, in fact, believe they were a super-race, superior to all the other races in Europe, whom they proceeded to exclude from their country, and worse, a nativist ideology which ultimately and inevitably ended in tears. This is a tale not without its modern parallels!
