Web cams (NB)

I don't know about the sound side of things, I would guess that local dialects...difference between Suffolk/Norfolk would be hard to make out, but say between Scottish/American/Welsh and Italian accents, I guess they would be distinguishable!

I believe that having a webcam live on a system does expose your system to potential intrusion, but a good firewall...Zone Alarm pro for example will keep out most of the unpleasant oiks that try to hack systems!

Fascinated as to what you want to watch with a web cam though? Are the Norfolk Broads that interesting, or are you wanting to watch over some horses?

My partner and I often use our webcams when we are apart. He works overseas, and it is a way that we can be together! I think what someone has said here about you being exposed to potential hackers if you do not have a firewall in place is correct. Hope that you achieve whatever you are trying to achieve.

Sound ....

is normally handled by a separate item - often the Notebook PC has a mic installed in the screen surround.
Mics are cheap anyway .... about a tenner for a stalk type, fiver for a lapel type.
The Webcam itself normally has no sound capability.

I use Yahoo Messenger for my Webcam and also phone link when needed - it works and costs nought !! except the internet llink that is paid anyway .... but it should be braodband to work in any way decently - dial-up - is a forget it way !!

To go back to your original question.

There are laods of solutions out there ( my SWMBO works in this area full time) and they are developing all the time. Products such as digi-watcher are currently leaders in the field of cheapie surveillance but, allegedly, streaming and security challenges are making it a very fast developing field.

Internet security for webcams over TCP/IP is broadly the same as for any other netbased application. However as it would appear to seem for all 'net' applications , the longer you are available continuously the easier for fraudsters to hit you; rather obvious statement really. Many wi-fi appliactions are currently spending loads of pennies on improving security ( I confess I am talking about major security concious organisations rather than you and me) so no idea how really secure for Jo Public. At the end of the day , if you have home security net blockade / security software, your only real risk is at the provider's end and they are likely to be a lot better than us, someone hacking in to pictures of your boat is probaly not a big issue given that loads of other boats around without any security?

talking of wifi & webcams

would it then be possible to have a webcam which is not wired to the PC , i.e. a webcam capable of moving around (or sort of looping the universe, so to say ? ) if so, how far would we be able to go...is the sky the limit, the moon, mars ?

Re: talking of wifi & webcams

Others in the industry probably know more ; however there are many cheapo systems that already talk to mobile phone networks via standard protocols. If you have satphone of course , so much the better !

Not sure if Vodafone and Orange have base stations on Mars or the Moon yet , however sure as 'eggs are eggs' as soon as they do you 'll be able to talk to your cheesy cousin - at a price. -:)

Re: talking of wifi & webcams

I'm not sure about Vodaphone and Orange, but the Iridium network already extends out into space. I'm not sure if the Moon is covered yet but it would be a fairly simple installation for them if not.

Mars of course is somewhat harder due to the time delay. I gather that the phone companies are working on predictive conversation algorithms to enable the participants to carry on the discussion without the need for the other to respond. These algorithms tend to be based on the observed behaviour of groups of young women.

predictive wimmin\' babble ?

now that you mention it, could it be that it's already operational overhere ?
