We missed so much!

We set off from Falmouth on halloween, 1st stop A Coruña, then on down the Iberian cost as far as Sines, thence to Madeira and on the Canaries for xmas. Cape Verde for 'carnaval' - which was great fun - and so on to Brazil. No need to emulate us, but it's still not too late to set off, and we didn't overstay 90 days in the Schengen zone.

On the insurance front, a decent insurer isn't a stupid one: a swinging mooring if properly maintained should be abosutely fine for the boat. Our boat has never been kept in a marina; she's 20 years old now and not particularly cheap to replace (a Rustler 42 I've owned from new). The insurer is absolutely happy with this but I do make sure that the moorings I use are well maintained.

FYI, the Falmouth Harbour Commissioner's moorings, as well as Mylor's, were part of the study which led to the book 'Towards Zero Failures in Swinging Moorings'. They absolutely aren't 'some random' moorings. The mooring I have privately in Plockton harbour is designed for my boat under 100mph (87 kts) winds with a 40% corrosion margin on top; I think it safer than 'some random marina' (Holyhead springs to mind)...

We’re not in a hurry so next year is fine. We’re not trying to do miles we like seeing places.
No, Falmouth aren’t random moorings but insurance is insurance. We can stay overnight on anchor or mooring but can’t leave the boat overnight on either in winter. It’s not unreasonable terms and we prefer a marina to leave anyway if only because then the dinghy becomes an issue when you leave. We’ll change that when we head south i’m sure.
