We know USA vs EU pricing but this is outrageous ....

Been there! I was once offered a fairly standard dry powder extinguisher in a Gosport chandlery for the princely sum of £97.50.

When I asked why it was so expensive I was given a load of guff about it being specially 'marinised' to withstand the harsh enviroment of a boat.
Left it in the shop and bought the identical model extinguisher in caravan and camping place for £11.99

At the end of the day, people will continue to ask silly prices as long as there are people prepared to pay them.

How do UK prices compare with prices elsewhere in the EU?

Perhaps there's a case for the Chandlery cruise as well as the booze cruise /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Tried both - both have restriction - US addressed only.

Defender has an 'International Checkout' option underneath the 'US Checkout' option when you are viewing your shopping cart - haven't tried to order anything, but surely this means they will ship anywhere?

Sadly my (limited) experience of the EU market for chandlery and electronics is that they too are expensive- one really needs to look at USA and the Far East but the problems to be resolved are as already highlighted plus of course avoiding the scam advertisers; not easy

They probably do it as part of a deal with their UK distributor, so that he has a free hand to charge what he likes in his own market. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Silva is the UK arm ... well actually EU arm of the whole affair.

I've actually had one quote HIGHER than RRP ... and that's from a shop that took me totally by surprise. I won't name and shame as I got balled out last time by powers that be !!

Try as I might - I can't get round this outside US bit ... but like Gin - I go out of my way to beat cr*p like this.

$99 is their local chart....

It's worth noting that the $99 price you've quoted is only for the USA chart (108-129). International NauticPath charts are generally around $200.

In the same way, UK suppliers sell our local NauticPath chart much cheaper than the other international charts.

It's probably not worth the hassle of sourcing a chart from the US at $200 if you can get it here for £130.

For a company in the US to ship direct outside the US they must be registered to export with the US goverment (since 9/11). Some do not wish to go to the trouble and the extra documentation is very time comsuming for them (very short sited ).

I have purchased alot for my new yacht from both US and UK. I have an agent in new york who will receive goods and comsolidate into one shipment for me (at a cost ).

This overcomes the problem. I have found that if I specify USPS for shipping the procedure in the US is mush simpler and most companies will do it this way.

I get my UK purchased sent to my brother and pick them up from him when I visit the UK.

Ok, my nearest (only) chandlery in Tampere (Näistenlahti) and is a real rip-off even though he'll give 10% discount to club members.
So ropes & rigging I agree with you but the little stuff comes from Biltema because it's good enough for the price and close...
It would probably be different if I was based in Helsinki or Turku...

Re: $99 is their local chart....

OK ... but that's Lowrance themselves ... and full mark up price.

I'm talking from discount places like West Marine etc.

Anyway - I now bought from Marine Scene at £139.99 + £15 p&p to Latvia ... best I could find.

But lets look at a product made in this country then sold in the US cheaper than here. How?

Quite simple. You charge what the market will bear in each country - or at least thats what I used to do when in business. That usually meant that the US price to the customer was similar to the UK one despite the extra costs of transport and duty from the UK. So we made a loss on full cost on goods shipped to the US but it gave us economies of scale. We made our profit on the UK market which was quite expensive for our overseas competitors to service partly because of transport costs (the channel is one of the most expensive ferry routes and shipment to the UK was usually to Rotterdam for reasons of volume/ dockers etc and then transhipment to the UK).

Its fair to say that anti competitive practises eg cartels are much less tightly policed in the UK, (not that we did any of that!) and this definitely affects the price of goods in UK shops. How many times have you been told "we arent allowed to do that" when you ask for a discount. By whom? If you're a biker just compare the discount you can get on a Jap bike where they dont "support" the dealers marin with what you can get on a BMW or Harley. You will see what I mean.

Maybe one of our chandler members can (anonymously) confirm what pressure he gets from the distributors to maintain prices
